There is one drive-in theater in Denver, Co. Their sign has said "last season, closing" for about 4 years now. There is also, in Monte Vista Colorado, a drive-in theater that also has a hotel on the outer ring with big windows in each room and the audio. Sleep-in theater? We also have Sonic, drive-in food, calling them a restaurant may be a stretch.

drive in's

Postby Eunice » Wed Sep 12, 2007 10:54 am

Heikki
The drive in movies are gone in northern Ca. I dont know where the closest one would be anymore.
I cant think of a drive in burger bar close to us either. Last one I was at was in Burns Oregon.

Heikki-

We don't go to drive inn movies too much, maybe 2 or 3 times in a season :(

Too busy camping

I do go once a week and have a fish sandwich

drive inn

Postby CPASPARKS » Wed Sep 12, 2007 12:59 pm

I like this drive in...It is literally in the middle of nowhere....

It is called Midway drive in...."midway between NYC and LA....midway between Turkey, Texas and Quitaque, Texas"

The bonus...Caprock Canyons State park is only about 15 minutes away.

Turkey (Hall County) Texas
Midway Drive-in: 806-423-1166
located off Highway 86 - west of 70
(midway between Quitaque and Turkey)

During the boom years just about every Texas town
had an outdoor picture show (or not far to go for one)
and most of the bigger cities could claim several. For
Turkey, Texas, it was the Midway, a modest Drive-in
built in 1955 with a capacity for 200 cars - but ample
enough for this rural community of half a thousand
people. The screen at the Midway had been lit for
32 seasons before it went dark, and remained dark
another 13 years before being acquired and restored
by a local schoolteacher (let that be a lesson to you!).
The reopening of the Midway in May of 2000 was the
first of two resurrections that occured in Texas during
Season 2K (the second one was Abilene's T&C Drive-in).
The screen is easy to spot from the road - painted with
a huge American flag motif on the back. On front It's lit
with a single feature on weekend nites, April - October.
Audio is FM. Admission: $4 for ages 12&up; $2 for kids.

* If you're thinking about maybe working the Midway
into a future roadtrip, late April would definitely be the
most interesting time to visit Turkey, Texas .. this was
the Home of Bob Wills, the legendary King of Texas
Swing .. and on the last Saturday in April, there is
a Bob Wills Day Celebration. It begins with an old
fashioned parade, followed by a big bar-b-que, and
then at nite, there's a western dance held down at
the old school gymnasium, plus a fiddlers contest,
a swingin outdoor concert, and an arts&crafts fair.

We went to this one a couple times during the TOW Carnation 4th of July teardrop gathering. Took about 10 of Ken's vintage cars there, lots of fun with the other cars that show up, great root beer floats & sloppy burgers. Danny

We still have Angel's Diner in Palatka, FL... This place is a real throwback. It's been there since 1932... The oldest diner in florida. It's a real dining car from way back! It's a very popular place for the hotrodders to meet for show & shine events. And, bikers often ride from Daytona and all over to go there too. Best hamburgers and onion rings anywhere!!! Really.

Heikki,

We used to have 4 drive-in movie theaters in this area. In the mid-to late 70's they all closed, probably due to the invention of the VCR. But one reopened about 7 or 8 years ago, the " Highway 66 Drive-in" at Carthage, MO. Open most of the year, and many people take their children so they can experience sitting in or on or around a car and watching a movie.

As far as drive-in restaurants, they are all gone. Used to go to one that had the coldest root beer, served in an ice covered glass mug, for a dime. Gosh I miss that, it was so cold, it hurt to drink it. Oh well, I guess that was the good old days I keep hearing so much about.

We have one left out of 4 around here. IIRC they are running 5 screens.
The one that was right down the road from where I live used to play all the skin flicks. It's been gone for quite a while and two others followed not long after.
I was at a Sonic Drive Inn at Lowes. I think they are planning one around here somewhere.
I'm not sure if Jerry's Curb Service is still in Beaver or not. That used to be a favorite hangout for the hot rods.

When I lived in Daytona Beach, there was a Drive-In-Church.

Edit: I just found their website so I guess they are still around http://www.driveinchurch.net
