5 Americans Seek Assylum in Finland

Postby Classic Finn » Thu Sep 20, 2007 5:04 pm

Boy is this a surprise to us here in Finland.

On the News and Papers - 5 Americans seek assylum here in Finland.
Our Government didnt mention names or the reason for the assylum..  as of yet...

Never heard of this before...Normally it would be assylum seekers into the USA. But from the USA to here...Hmmmm :scratchthinking:

Ok which of the 5 teardrop builders from the Forum here are seeking assylum from the States?    Cmon speak up?

Our News Here ....

Five U.S. citizens seek asylum from Finland

All in a day's work, they say, but it was not exactly a routine occurrence for the immigration officials at Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport on Tuesday evening, when a family of five United States citizens asked for asylum in Finland.
The group arrived in Finland from another Schengen country. This is unlikely to improve their prospects of being granted asylum, owing to the terms of the Dublin Convention, which generally assumes that someone seeking asylum is required to apply in the member-state first entered.

The authorities are not at liberty to divulge the reasons given for the application for asylum, but at least according to current information it is not believed to have any connection with the war in Iraq.

It is quite exceptional for US nationals to seek asylum in Finland.
According to the statistics of the Directorate of Immigration (UVI), before Tuesday's events just one American citizen had filed an asylum application here during the current decade. The Directorate will now consider the latest application.

Heikki,
Probably just an ordinary American family that realized they could get decent health coverage if they stayed...

That little orange TT you have in your signature was at IRG1.0...

What I think will happen is that they will be returned to the 1st country of entry..due to the Schengen Convention here. Here are Countries that belong to it..Here is about the Convention and its meaning..

All kidding aside and I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my initial remark, but this story does interest me as to why...
Obviously, we have five Americans that are disgruntled but...
If they want asylum, why choose an ally to the US?
That doesn't make sense...

According to our Immigration Office - 1 other case in a decade has taken place from the USA...

Ok they are American Nationals but where are they from Originally?

Middle East? Where Else?? Our Officials wont say anything at the moment but it will be in the papers and news soon...Im sure as this is an interesting case...

Id sure like to know..

Why would anyone want to leave the USA?
Ok Granted ... They did choose a good country to do so but I dont understand as to why?

Has this happened between Canada and USA being that your allies and good friends ...?

Ok I guess they have their reason..

Well one thing we know for certain is that they will be housed in our style of reception center till their documents and such are checked and till the Immigration Officials here decide wether or not to send them back to the 1st country of entry...

Our refuge centers are more like bed and breakfast places.. and the food there is very good.. And yes they will be able to go outside for excercise and play or what have you..and children will have school or whatever if need...If they are
with children...

But they could also be there for several months to 2 years..or opposite of a few days .. who knows...but they get very good food and housing till who knows when..and medical if needed.

Here is information on our system and guidelines...for assylum seekers to Finland..

Accommodation

Asylum seekers are refered to a reception centre after their arrival in Finland. Allocation of accommodation depends on the availability of places in the centres. Asylum seekers may either stay in a reception centre or find their own accommodation. But only living in the reception centre is free of charge. There are 15 reception centres and one detention centre in Finland. Centres are run either by the local municipalities, the state or by the Finnish Red Cross. Whenever possible, families are accommodated separately but single people may have to share rooms and facilities. The minors are accommodated in special centres for children, so-called group homes. Generally, asylum seekers cook their own meals. Asylum seekers are allowed to stay in the reception centres during the whole procedure, inclusive of the appeal process.

Detention

Asylum seekers whose identity and travel route cannot be verified can be detained upon arrival in Finland. Only detention centre is in Helsinki.

Freedom of movement

Asylum seekers are free to travel within Finland.

Financial assistance

Asylum seekers are entitled to a living allowance, which is intended to cover all living expenses, including food and clothing, but not accommodation (available free of charge in the reception centres). The allowance is based on the basic supplementary social allowance granted to nationals, although its amount is reduced by 15% for an adult and 20% for a child on account of the accommodation and other services provided in the reception centre. Those staying outside the reception centre also receive the reduced allowance. Asylum seekers are not entitled to child benefit or any other social benefits.

Work

Asylum seekers are entitled to work without permit three months after they have left an asylum application. Work and training activities are also organised in the reception centres. Asylum seekers who refuse to participate in the organised activities may have their living allowance reduced. The work activities proposed in the centres may include cleaning and repairing the reception facilities, office work, organising children, hobbies or cultural activities, and so on. The training activities in the centres usually consist of language tuition and information on the Finnish society and the legal system. Asylum seekers may also attend courses outside the reception centres, such as computer work and handicraft. In some cases, asylum seekers may organise training activities in the centres themselves.

Language tuition

All reception centres offer language tuition in either Finnish or Swedish. Attendance is not compulsory. However, an asylum seeker who lives at a reception centre and repeatedly refuses, without justified cause, training activities that promote employment, may lose part of the social assistance.

School attendance

Children of asylum seekers are entitled to attend Finnish comprehensive school (from seven to sixteen years of age). In many schools, children are placed in special preparatory classes for foreign children where they are first taught Finnish or Swedish before going into a normal school class. Adult asylum seekers are also free to apply for a place in any school, institute or university. It is up to the school whether or not to accept them as students. Asylum seekers are not entitled to student financial aid.

Access to health services

A nurse is attached to each reception centre, and on arrival all asylum seekers undergo basic health screening. They have access to municipal – and in special cases also private – healthcare if they require urgent medical treatment or essential dental treatment. These services are free. Asylum seekers in need of urgent treatment due to torture may also go to the special Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims in Helsinki.

Legal aid

The Refugee Advice Centre provides legal aid and advice for asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants in Finland. The staff of the reception centre helps asylum seekers to contact the Refugee Advice Centre.

So being an assylum seeker in our country isnt bad considering what they are entitled to as Foreigners here. And what benefits there are.

Lenient Id say ...What are the places like for assylum seekers in the States? Or Canada?

:x If it's some of the so called democrats who claimed they'd leave if Bush (some said it both times) got elected. then it's about time but you don't want them. They're mostly spoiled rich brat trouble makers who almost never back up what they say. Good luck you and your country might need it.
