camping with dogs?

when I camp (in the woods) I often take my dog. what are the rules for dogs at campsites? what do you droppers do?

never had a problem with Gretta at a campground.... I let her run free if there are no others around and I'm in a big open area with no camp sites nearby... else, I tie a retractable leash to a tree and she has 20 feet of roaming space.

If someone parks nearby, I shorten the leash. I don't think I've ever had a problem, but I'm very aware of other people and not bothering them.. and I carry a supply of poop bags and always clean up. Also, she never barks and is not afraid of lightning or thunder.... a very easy dog to travel with.

Since I normally stay in campgrounds, my dog Sarah stays on her lead. Of course, when I keep treats in my pocket, she won't leave my side anyway.
Don't think dogs can count? Put three treats in your pocket while your dog is watching and give her only two...

Campsite rules are usually that the dog must remain on a leash. You must clean up after it. No vicious dogs allowed. I have been to some privately owned campgrounds that do not allow certain breed dogs. I have a Labrador retriever, she goes camping wherever we do. In the woods she runs free, in the campgrounds we follow the rules.

Some campgrounds require that your dog is on a "lead", some get really specific and start giving lengths to the lead "6' maximum". I wonder if they have some sort of standard measuring stick to check, and do the fines grow incrementally with the number of inches over the standard? What you can and can't get away sort of depends on how well trained and obedient your animal is, and by all means pick up their business. My dog may be a mooch, but she has better manners than a lot of kids that I've seen running around a campground. Doug

Ocoee has gone with me on two trips so far..................

Even though she's a dog who will come back when called I adhere if any rules are posted that dogs should be leashed. If there is a open area I will take her there to catch her frisbee or ball but let her drag a 30' line.

In camp I use a cool tie down that can wrap around a tree or tire and then her line is attached to it. The big advantage here is that she doesn't get tangled.

She's been a good girl to travel with.....I would take her more but she's "wanted" at home and when I go by myself I'm usually river kayaking and it's not far to have her wait for 7-8 hours in camp alone while I'm boating so she's home with family.

Ocoee is totally exhausted when she gets into the td at night. As soon as I'm under the covers she'll put her head on my hip and she's fast asleep.

She's a real treat to take along and I'm looking forward to a fall trip soon with her.

We started to take our puppy camping when she was 5 mos. old. She loves to camp. She so use to the wild life that she doesn't make a sound when the raccoon start jumping on our teardrop. She sleeps in our side tent that is hooked to the teardrop. We adhere to all campsite rules.

The rules at State Parks in Texas are that all dogs must be on a leash.

I have three Shih Tzus. I always have at least one with me when camping.

Sure seems to me that most campers have a dog. They are a good way to start a conversation with fellow campers.

Binx-y went to Minden with us and He and Honey went with us to Scott Lake twice. They are great campers!!! I keep both on retractable leashes because of the park rules, but both come when called. Binx sleeps in our tear drop with us and Honey sleeps in the vehicle. But all these times, we haven't had any problem with the camp hosts..in fact at Scott lake, the camp host have a chinese pub named Chief! Who rides around with them to check on all the campers.

No Problem here! I agree with Doug, my dogs have better manners than some kids I've seen in campsites! And my dogs don't play their music too loud!!! HAHAHAHAHA

I just got back from a 4 day camp at Harrison Lake State Park in Ohio. As I rode my bike around the campgrounds , I figured at least 3 out of 4 campers had 1 dog or more.( 1 couple had 4 dogs. ) All the dogs were on leashes. Most dogs were quiet. A few of the owners let their dogs bark without trying to keep them quiet. That is VERY annoying to me as I try to read or relax . It is too bad that a few dog owners let their dogs bother the other campers & maybe ruin a good time by constant barking. I did not go to the owner or the park ranger to report it. I either patiently waited for the owner to hush the dog or went for a bike ride , or put my ear buds in & turned up the music. I did see 2 owners that did not even pickup after their dog! I think that is in very bad taste. Overall I was pretty happy with the dog situation. If some campers would make their kids behave as well as the dogs do , camping would have been perfect!!

I never camp in campgrounds... only out in the boonies. Pedro (my pit bull) has never known a leash.... well, except at the vets!

I really would like to actually have the same rights as you. But here in Canada we cannot own the dog of our choice.....haha not our choice. Pit bulls are banned (what a shame). I have friends who own pit bulls that are no more than loving, caring house pets. You know how it is one rotten apple spoils the bunch. So we bought a American Bull dog as close as we can get to a pit. She is loving and caring house pet that loves and plays with our 3 yr old son. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

I had a pit bull, it was probably the best dog we've ever had. Very intelligent and very loyal. They get a bad rap as an aggressive breed. In reality, they are very easy going, and friendly. That dog was that he was not afraid of anything, he'd stare you right in your eyes. That kinda freaked people out. That lack of fear is why people think that they are aggressive.

b.bodemer, Ocoee is a beauty of a Cattle Dog. We had one like her named Shooter. They are wonderful animals. Shooters favorite pastime was herding the kid and her friends around the yard.
