Got Speed...

Got the router and stuff this evening, but found out after talking with one of AT&T support persons that I'm lacking an Ethernet to USB adapter. :fb
Anyone know what those go for???

Before you spend any more money---make sure your computer is new enough to support an Ethernet. If not take it back and save your bucks for a new computer. Or buy a used computer that has one in it. You won't regret it  Fast is only as good as the whole system.

Yeah, what she said. Check to see if you have a built in ethernet port before you go out and buy an adapter. Computers used to require a network card but it became so common that motherboards just built them in.

The first mistake you made was talking to AT&T support.

Like Rocky says, chances are, you already have an Ethernet port in your computer.

DSL modem gets connected to the router via a Cat 5 cable, and a Cat 5 cable goes from the router to the ethernet port on your computer.

Dean's computer has a 1.6ghz processer and is running Win XP. If he doesn't already have a ethernet port, I see no reason he can't add a PCI ethernet card. I might even have one kicking around here somewhere.
I have a spare Cat 5 cable too.

Ira--Look at you talking all ethernetcat5technobabble stuff. Who knew?
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Well, he's working on a PC and not a Mac, so he's bound to have problems:

There hasn't been a Mac sold without an Ethernet port since like 1995.

If you do need a USB to Ethernet adapter it's pretty inexpensive.

Example:

http://www.dlink.com/products/category.asp?cid=8&sec=1

Now before anybody hops on me with "don't buy DLink go with XXXXX brand" realize that I only put that out as an example. Buy whatever you want. They all work.

But, I'm betting you have an ethernet RJ45 port on your machine. Take a look, it has the appearance of an RJ11 on steroids.

http://www.tcswnc.com/RJ11%20and%20RJ45 ... ectors.htm

It sounds to me like you're trying to get a wireless setup going? If you don't have an 802.11b/g/n adapter built in to the computer you could possibly go with a PCI wireless adapter, or a USB wireless adapter. I myself would go with the PCI card if there was an option. Go to a real computer store and talk to them. Or call the local geek kid in the neighborhood and give him $20 to set you up. It'll be worth it in the long run.

If you do go wireless, be careful with cordless phones and the like. Quite possible to get some random/strange interference happening that can be hard to track down.

Then, once you get it all set up you'll need to outfit your tear with a cantennae. Do a little war-tearing in the dark hours of the night. Steal bandwidth from your neighbors. Impress that local neighborhood kid geek with your mad 733T skillz.
