Truckee is actually at the top of the infamous Donner Pass and about 40 miles from Reno, Nv., There is lots of forest on the west side of nouthern California.

Bears are a real issue here right now...It's not uncommon to have them break into homes and cabins and head right for the fridge. Especially up in Tahoe. I live up in an area where there are a number of orchards/vineyards and berry farms nearby, they are all looking for eats for the winter. I've seen them on the highway really close to town. Large cats are a problem also. Had a neighbor lose a couple of goats to Mt. Lions in the last year. It may be California, but is wild and woolier than some might expect, at least in the northern portions... Doug
