Finland Builds Another - Largest Now of All Cruise Ships

Postby Classic Finn » Thu Oct 04, 2007 12:44 pm

On the news this evening Finland builds the Largest Ever Cruise Ship Named Project Genesis for RCCL. Finland has been a longtime ship builder in general and especially for RCCL and Carnival ..95 percent of the work done by the Finns once again known for their high quality and precision workmanship..

AP) Royal Caribbean International on Monday ordered the world's largest and most expensive cruise ship, a $1.24 billion vessel that will hold up to 6,400 passengers. It's the latest step in the industry trend of supersizing ships, which delight many passengers but are too crowded for other guests.

The ship, dubbed Project Genesis, will be 220,000 gross registered tons when it is delivered to the world's second-largest cruise operator in fall 2009 by Oslo, Norway-based shipbuilder Aker Yards. Gross registered tons is the standard way to measure a ship's size and is a unit of volume equal to 100 cubic feet.

Aker said its contract price of 900 million euros _ about $1 billion _ would be "the most valuable ship ever ordered in the history of commercial shipbuilding." The $1.24 billion figure includes all expenses for the ship, "from forks and knives and sheets to artwork and everything else," said Harri Kulovaara, the Miami-based cruise line's executive vice president of maritime operations.

Aker said the contract is contingent on final approval of financing and the ship will be built at one of its Finnish yards. The cruise line, a unit of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., has an option for a second ship.

"Project Genesis truly is a remarkable ship. Its bold design, daring innovations and technological advancements will delight our existing cruisers and help us draw in new ones," Richard Fain, the parent company's chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

The announcement also steals some of the spotlight from rival Carnival Corp., the world's largest cruise operator. Carnival has studied building a ship about the same size, but its Pinnacle project is "on the back burner" because of its prohibitively high price, spokesman Tim Gallagher said.

Kulovaara said in a phone interview that the new ship will be more fuel efficient than current vessels, but he declined to give a specific figure. He said plans for the types of onboard amenities were being finalized. Royal Caribbean has been an innovator in featuring ice skating rinks, rock climbing walls and surfing pools.

Royal Caribbean's ships are typically more upscale than the bargain Carnival Cruise Lines' vessels, but they aren't as traditional as those of luxury carriers such as Cunard.

Project Genesis will carry 5,400 passengers based on two people per cabin, Kulovaara said. But as most cruise cabins can accommodate more than two people using cots or other beds, that number rises to a maximum capacity of 6,400.

Ray Weiller, an owner of discount online travel agency Cruisequick.com, said many of his clients are drawn to the ever-growing size and number of amenities of ships, but others tire of waiting in long lines to get on and off the vessels. Many complain about the large ships overwhelming some ports of call with too many people trying to visit, he said.

Royal Caribbean still offers a variety of ship sizes, so customers who don't like larger vessels will have other options, Kulovaara said. The ship will sail in the Caribbean, where many ports already handle megaships, but ports will need some infrastructure impovements to handle it, he said.

Carnival Corp.'s Cunard Line currently has the world's largest cruise ship _ the Queen Mary 2 _ at 151,400 gross registered tons. But Royal Caribbean is scheduled to get an even bigger ship in June, the 160,000-ton Freedom of the Seas. It will carry 3,600 passengers double occupancy and 4,370 maximum.

Both will be eclipsed by Project Genesis, which will be 1,180 feet long, 154 feet wide at water level and 240 feet high.

Aker Yards employs about 13,000 people at 13 shipyards in Norway, Finland, Germany, Romania and Brazil.

Shares of Royal Caribbean rose 25 cents to $44.55 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The shipbuilder's shares rose almost 6 percent to 347 kroner ($52.47) in morning trading on the Oslo stock exchange.

The Ship Freedom of The Seas awaits in Helsinki, Finland to set Sail in June. Now that is big... I saw it here..

I thought that gross tonnage was the weight of water displaced by the ship. Gross registered tons is a unit of volume? That's weird! Any way you slice it she's a big 'un. I wonder how much weight she carries in ballast to compensate for that height?

Showoff!

And while we're on the subject:

Does anyone remember that planned project which was literally, a floating city at sea? Not as if you can sail the "thing" from Bermuda to the Mediterranean in a week, but like it COULD travel to various places around the world.

For the rich, to buy condos on it.
Here we go again!

There is Residensea or The World which is a 'standard' cruise liner split up into large apartments - for those who think a regular cruise liner is too cheap....

And then there is the Freedom Ship which is a seriously-cracked project aimed, as far as I can tell, at those who think gated communities are waay too vulnerable. This one dwarfs every ship afloat, by a large margin - I believe there are no ports large enough to accept this ship - the flight deck is large enough to take serious planes with none of that arrester gear nonsense. I think this project has stalled, not surprisingly.

The Freedom Ship gallery is worth a visit to see what a wild idea it was.

Interesting to find this on their website:

Today everything is revolving around financing.

Our biggest delay to-date has been the hundreds of "scam" operations that have come to us claiming to be "big time" investors and they want to provide the initial investment for Freedom Ship. After we work with them for a week or two, they start asking us for money, so this tells us that they do not have any money. Then we move on to someone else. We are not going to give any of these "con men" money, but what we do lose is our time in checking them out, talking to them, and listening to their line of BS. And our time is our most valuable asset.

Unfortunately, we must check out everyone who comes to us, because someone may be "for real." All in all we have probably lost more than a year in our time table. These "scamsters" are everywhere. There must be millions of them out there.

As an engineer who, previously, had only heard about "financial scam operations" I did not ever expect to encounter one in person. But now, I have met hundreds of people involved in financial scams. I should write a book. If the FBI, Interpol, or any other legal agency is serious about finding these people, I can tell them where to find lots of them.

However, we think we have finally found a group who is "for real." At least, they are not asking us for money. We will continue to work with them (as well as any other group who is "for real") and hopefully we can give all you guys some very good news in the not too distant future.

Almost sounds to me like the whole thing was set up as a scam in the first place. I don't this is that big of an issue with legitimate businesses.
The more you read of that sight the less believable it begins to get in my opinion.
The latest info in there was posted in 2005.

Gee when are they going to stop... Bigger and Bigger...
As if the folks that live in the Caribbean and these places arent mad enough that a huge tub comes along and tears up every reef in the area and then some..

And at night dump sewage all over the place... yes there is a limit how far or how close they dump the stuff but its pathetic... even here in Scandinavia the foreign ships dump it into the sea at night ..

I was in the Caribbean onboard these at (the time new) vessels and no respect of the seas till RCCL got caught...after a few knowledgable crew reported it..

And now they want yet bigger.. You should see the purification and treatment plants they have onboard these new vessels ...Just huge but still lots of it gets dumped..

And Im totally against that..Here or there...Id say go back to Windjammer Cruising and travel the Ol Way .. Instead of these nut houses on pontoons..

Luxurious for the passengers maybe but do the folks know how they treat their workers onboard and what really goes on in the so called heart of the ship..

Modern Day Slave Ship and Abuse of their own employees onboard.. Go to the Port of Biscayne and take a close look at all the Attorneys Cars looking to make money on abused employees far away from home..Majority age 18 to 25 from the former Eastern block Countries and Asia.

Now thats Luxurious ...Thats also the black side of this Industry..Happy Cruising.. They can have it..

If the ships were registered in Norway or Under the Norwegian flag employees would be treated 100 times better than now due to majority being registered in Nassau or Liberia... and now they get away with so much illegal things...

Hi Rob

Ive worked in this profession long enough so I know what they do onboard these ships as lavishing and luxurious as they are ...There are no laws to protect the workers onboard these vessels.. No unions for them to come to help if needed. These companies basically own the employees for the duration of the contract which is a minimum of 6 months to 9 months.

Turnover is at 80 percent for one week... but they have thousands more waiting to take the adventure.. so who cares ... this is the attitude..

Upon arrival in Miami... All foreign workers are to report onboard.. they turn over their passport and receive an Id for onboard Crew..after fulfilling of contract

They give the passports back after they deliver you to the Airport wherever this maybe and make sure you leave on the flight they put you on..

Wages? now thats another story...its not what they say or promise...Guaranteed wages of 100 -200 usd monthly.. and tips they say... yes if you work your butt off for 22 hours nonstop.. 6 to 9 months nonstop.
Lavishing?

RCCL is known for this but again if you want even a worse company its Carnival.

I dont have any respect for these companies ... Due to the facts above..

I was never mistreated there since I belonged to Higher Staff but the things I could tell you that took place onboard to others.

The bad thing about these companies also they preach Save the Seas and dont pollute but still under starlit skies thick brownish white foam is seen on the aft of the ship .. and next day a surveillance plane spots oil on the seas...again Happy Cruising..Bigger and Better right? If these companies only would treat the Crew as Crew and not dogs they would have a good thing.. but not this way... exploitation of young workers is what its called in a so called luxurious form or fashion ..

So in that respect I,ll take a Windjammer Cruise but they are also costly ..
but the group is small and these ships can get to places these tubs cant..
and they are more private in that fashion or respect.

But I,ll take my canoe and tear.. Ive seen the oceans enough..and know what its like onboard ships.
