HELP ( WITH SKUNKS} THE FOUR LEGGED KIND

Postby crankshaft » Thu Oct 04, 2007 12:35 pm

iIt's been some time since I posted my last post. Usually when I need a question answered, someone has already asked the same question and someone else has posted the answer. I just have to do a little research through the files.
This time. I couldn't find what I need.

How do you keep skunks away? more important, How doe you get the smell off of a sprayed dog..

Being an avid camper since I was a boy scout in Tennessee, I've been able to handle the majority of animals including the raccoons that seem to be attracted to our type of out door living. But skunks??????

HELP

Crankshaft in San Diego.

All I can say is if you happen to see one leave it along if he is in your camp site wait till he leaves in otherwards leave him the h--- alone    8)
If your dog gets sprayed you wont be able to catch him he will be running away from himself

Try this recipe:
http://home.earthlink.net/~skunkremedy/home/

I have tried store products, tomato juice, and a slight variation of the recipe above. This works the best, but be prepared, it won't kill all the smell. Only time will take care of it.

My long haired dog has gotten sprayed 3 times and this was the most effective at killing the smell. All the tomato juice did was tint his hair and give him a treat. Turns out he loves tomato juice.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

I don't think there's a way to KEEP them away, but Dean has the right course of action for trapping and drowning.

Which is more fun anyway.

We have skunks around my house all the time. I've often sat out on the deck with the cats and watched them dig for grubs. I don't bother them, they don't bother me.

They are very pretty by the way.

this is what i do,
Wash the dog with dish detergent being careful not to get it in dogs eyes.
soak the dog down with massengill douche and let dry (honest)
after dog is dry spray with FDS.
This is a tried and true method as used by vet. hospitals. Used it on dogs many times myself, has to do with the breaking of the PH of skunk stink
Keep it fun, Move at your own pace, Don't get hurt

Skunks are very friendly animals, but due to nearsightedness they startle easily. they also like the sound of the human voice, in my dealings with them I keep some distance, don't move quickly and talk to them in a soothing voice. I have pulled many bottles and yogart cups off their heads and have never been sprayed. 8)

Dont know about the smell. I had one set up house under my back porch. Tried several things & finally put a motion sensor light under there. He moved out.
The impossable just takes longer & cost more.

I've spent the last 7 months of my life grooming dogs, and the folks where I worked said to use a bit of diluted listerene in regular dog shampoo. Never had the opportunity to try it (thankfully). Be careful to not use too much, as it could be irritating....and definitely be careful of your pups eyes.
