Back Surgery - A Question

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby sledge » Sun Oct 07, 2007 9:27 am

Most of the time , you get the nerve damage from the surgery, not the back poblem. everytime I have come out of surgery I have had some numbness that I didn't have before, and it Never went away . like lower legs , feet, toes . .... but, in my case it was a good trade. I'd rather have some numb toes and feet as to be in pain 24/7..... I'm not saying it will happen to you, just that it happened to me.... good luck with yours

sledge,

Do you really think the trade off of pain, for numbness, is a good thing?

I really would like to lose the pain, but would also like to be able to feel all of my body parts. Does the numbness come from nerve damage or from blood flow problems?

I will have to give this some more thought. I would love to go back to being pain free, but I guess I will have to determine the cost involved, such as numb, feet, toes and maybe even legs. Truthfully that thought is more worrisome than the pain. I've lived with the pain for 3+ years and I know what to expect there.

BTW, I forgot to mention, the doctor also told me I have some arthritic calcifications in my thoracic region ( between my shoulder blades ), so this surgery is not going to help that. It gives me pain when the barometer changes. I can tell when it is going to rain. Probably better than our local weatherman.

Oh well, thanks for the info. Sounds like I've got some serious pondering to do.

It's possible, Mike. I have more good days than bad days--but reading through all of the issues with L5-S1 herniations really does spook me.

Mike, all good luck is gratefully appreciated and accepted...but don't short yourself. I already feel pretty lucky--and when luck is a little late to the party, there's always better living through chemistry! :D

Gaelen,

there's always better living through chemistry

Yes, and thank God for that. I sometimes wonder what our ancestors did when confronted with the pain problems I see everywhere today. I suppose they suffered a great deal and then died young. As many problems that exist in the world today, I am still glad that I am alive now and live in the USA.

I hope today finds you well. :)

MJ,

Tried several chiropractors, but when I tell them what is diagnosed wrong with me, a couple said they wouldn't touch me. Too much liability if they would move something the wrong way.

The avatar change was just me goofing around. Uploaded 5 or 6 new ones this morning and thought I would try them during the week. I think I need a hockey mask though so my ugly mug doesn't scare small children and elderly ladies. :R
