Charging 2 6v Batteries in Series

Postby James & Avisia Flohr » Sun Oct 14, 2007 2:39 pm

By gleening as many forum discussions re; best battery setup, I've noticed many like two 6v golf cart batteries hooked in series. If one were to go with this configuration, how would you recharge the series setup? As a 12 system, as a 6v system, attach the charger to one of the batteries and expect that both batteries will charge, or attach to the connecting cable (series) which will charge both? Whew :? Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanx, Jim

First of all, it is assumed that the batteries are a matched pair.

The two six volt batteries in series simply power a 12 volt system and in use, behave together as would any 12 volt battery with increased capacity. You would connect the charging circuit as in any 12 volt system, with the positive lead of the charger to the positive connection on the battery, and the negative connection on the negative terminal on the other battery. No charging connection should be made at the jumper between the two batteries.
Think of your twelve volt battery as six two volters, or three fours, or two sixes. A normal automotive type battery is made up essentially of several two volt cells. 12 volt batteries have six internal cells connected serially, six volt batteries have three cells.

Hope this helps.

If batteries are a pretty well matched pair, charge them as one single 12 volt battery.....

Hi,

Do like the others said...

I have the type of system you are considering; 2- 6 volt golf cart batteries.

Connected, they produce 12 Volts for my trailer.
The battery tender is connected by attaching the positive lead to the positive terminal of one battery, and the negative to the negative terminal of the other battery.

Works great!
