An APC is actually pretty cheap insurance... it will not protect against a direct lightning strike, but voltage spikes can be caused by a strike miles away...
my unit protects computer from electric spikes, cable tv hits (high speed internet) and phone line hits.. everything that comes into the computer goes through the apc unit.. and it has something like 25k insurance... I think when I bought it 4 years ago it was around 65 dollars.... peace of mind is worth it.
The computer actually runs off the apc battery, which is continually recharged by the power company.. it shuts down my computer automatically after 15 minutes if I'm not nearby.
