What about Steve Fossett

Postby EZ » Tue Oct 16, 2007 1:43 pm

I'm looking for him....

Nevada, USA - 8 September 2007 - Multiple air and ground searches for aviator Steve Fossett, missing since Monday afternoon, continue today, with some two dozen aircraft and ground teams participating. The Civil Air Patrol are continuing to cover an expanded (10,000 square mile) search area based from Minden airport while intensive 'low and slow' helicopter operations continue closer to the Flying M Ranch, Steve's point of departure. Thermal-image detection equipped National Guard aircraft have been flying at night as well.

New satellite images are also enabling internet-based anaysis by individuals hoping to help. The project is an 'Amazon Mechanical Turk' based effort with recent images from GeoEye, supplier of many images to Google Earth. Please see:http://www.mturk.com/mturk/preview?groupId=9TSZK4G35XEZJZG21T60&kw=Flash
for details how individuals can help review specific search areas.

Interesting use of Google Earth. I still find it odd that his ELT wasn't screaming the moment he went down.

EZ,

Silly question......

Are you supposed to copy the image and really study it? Like zoom in and around with a picture viewer? Or will the wreckage be visible in the picture and resolution provided?

You know Mary K it isn't all that clear. So, not a silly question at all. The picture that you are shown is roughly about 400 feet by 200 feet as indicated. I am assuming that the sample picture of the airplane crash site on the right is about the size it would be on the left picture. I am also assuming that you could see plane wreckage in a 400 X 200 foot space.

Either it isn't explained very well or we just aren't that smart. It certainly is a bizarre way of searching for an airplane. I think it is too bad to end this way as it seems. As much as I envied Fossett his ability to have all the aviation adventures he has had due to his wealth, the guy had stones and took on a lot of incredibly dangerous challenges. I do hope they figure this out.

I think the only place his ELT would not work is underwater, also his watch had a sat. system. The batteries are checked during the annual insp. of the airframe. My guess would be underwater, Lake Tahoe.?? Jim G

Apparently these are brand spanking new images taken just for this purpose or they are always updating Google Earth. At least that is what I am thinking. Then you compare them to the old Google Earth pic and see if what looks like a crashed airplane was in the old picture.

I wonder if I left with my airplane and went missing if there would be Google Earth pictures to help find me.
