Starting A New Career At 50...

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby TENNJIM » Mon Oct 15, 2007 9:21 pm

Wishing you the best on that new career. I went the other way. Started a business and became self employed at 50 in 1996. It is a real challenge changing directions in life, but it has worked out really well. I may even get to retire soon and attend more of those teardrop gatherings. This is my first year and I have logged about 6500 miles. I really love the lifestyle. Looking forward to the 2nd IRG in 2008.

Update on Career

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Tue Oct 16, 2007 5:32 pm

Dean's new career is going great with lots of homework and on-line class assignments to do. Good news-bad news about something that happened yesterday....Good News is that Dean was able to walk away from a near head-on collision with a shoulder injury....Bad News: my pick-up truck got totaled in the accident. I am so grateful that he was not seriously injured or killed in the wreck, but he's got to pay a visit to his Doctor for x-rays and a check to see what really did happen to that shoulder. So, that means time off from work and possibly having to work with a very sore shoulder. Stay tuned for an update....

P.S. No, the accident was not his fault. He did the best to avoid it. Lucky for him our County Sheriff was right behind the truck and saw the event occur, so we have a great witness account for the police/highway patrol.

Accident Update

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Wed Oct 17, 2007 3:15 pm

:? Dean is VERY sore today as the body begins to recognize the bashing it took in the wreckage. Been very busy with insurance calls, medical visit follow-up, etc. The doctor said the X-rays show no damage such as a dislocation/break, but it shows he's been developing arthritis in the shoulder which was heightened by the collision on that side.

Thanks for the prayers and good wishes. I'm thankful that neither driver was seriously hurt or worse. :worship:

Thanks everyone for the well wishes... I do feel fortunate that I had time to react and avoid a head on collision, but I'm pissed that the truck got demollised. It moved the cab over about 8" at the frame rails.
As far as I'm concerned, the other driver needs a spanking. She was trying to take a sharp curve at the bottm of a hill. (right for her, left for me) The speed limit in her direction is 30 mph... she was going about 60 mph and it was wet. I yanked the truck over to the shoulder of the road in my direction, any further and I'd go off the road. She just missed hitting me head on... Hit me in the left front tire and driver's door and over the bank I went.
I'll tell yaa... I've never been a real big fan of seat belts.... It's just from the era that I grew up in, but I'm sold on 'em now and glad that I had mine on... Besides, it's the law.
I'm also glad that the truck didn't catch fire, because it took about 15 minutes for the firemen to cut open the rig so I could get out.

Please drive careful and be defensive... There are a lot of idiots out there.

Good to hear that you came out of it relatively unharmed.

I was in that situation also, nearly a head-on after a drunk chick hopped over the median on a divided road. My chest was bruised for days afterward yours probably will be too.

Rock,
Yup... Very sore right now.
Between the pain and anger, I didn't get a wink of sleep the first night.
Slept very hard last night and could barely move when I woke up this morning, but a long hot shower before work helped a lot.
The hardest part was keeping my cool and not going Norwegian on the other driver at the scene...
Had to keep a cork on it while my blood just boiled inside.
(I really think that's why my blood pressure was way up the next day)

Right now... I'm feeling fair, but my kid just read the dosage to me from the Aleve bottle and it seems like I've already taken twice the maximum dosage of 3 caplets for a 24 hour period since this morning.... 2 at wake up time, 2 at lunch and 2 at dinner.
Oops...

Glad you are doing ok. It's been a while since I was in a bad one and I'm hoping to keep it that way. My last one netted me a fractured skull and lots of bruises. It sure does suck but at least it will heal!! Could have been much worse, just glad it wasn't!!!!

Wow, Dean...glad you were able to react quickly. Too bad about the truck, but being able to walk away is a LOT more important!

Wow Dean, just came across this thread. Kudos on the new job and God is good! Thank goodness for your quick reactions and the fact that you weren't hurt worse than you were or worse yet killed.

Hope you recover quickly. BTW asprin is better for arthritis. :o

Dean,
Glad you're okay, the truck can be replaced.

My theory on seat belts. I would never fly without wearing one and driving is a lot more dangerous.
