That episode is on tonight, I think, on BBCA. I think it was Alabama, and they stepped in it pretty good. They wrote on each others cars and had to drive from one side of the state to the other. That stunt was a bit over the top, IMO.

They used to do more really fun stuff, like using a giant pneumatic car launcher to shoot little cars at a target in a quarry.

Oh, it's not always to be funny - sometimes we do dumb things for no good reason at all.....

On the subject of Top Gear and danger/accidents, another British TV motoring magazine Fifth Gear (novel name, eh?...) was using the driver leading the British production car championship, Jason Plato, to test a truly astonishing car, the Caparo - it makes the Atom look quite boring.... In testing there was a fire and Plato got burned - perhaps just enough to affect his performance the following weekend when he lost the championship by 3 points (out of 300). Here is the video:
