Stove Location on Counter

Postby boomboomtulum » Tue Oct 23, 2007 8:32 pm

Question about my stove. I purchased a Suburban 2 burner stove from PPLMotorhome.com and had planned to install it on the right side of my counter. But am a little worried about heat or flame to close to the walls and cabinets. I thought about using a metal shield of some sort low enough to be able to get into the cabinet behind but tall enough to hold back flames. There should be about 4 -5 in. clearance. Has this been a problem with others?

Dave,

For those exact reasons I use my stove on a pull-out folding shelf. I was afraid of starting a fire with the trailer as the fuel. Pictures of how I did it are in my album.

we have a cook/prep table that we sit up by the galley. The dutch oven table is on the other side. i have seen a lot of tears with the same table as ours. i think it works great.

Dave...I use a Coleman 2 burner white gas stove, bolted down to the slide out and it has formica on top of it. As a test I boiled a large pot of water on it, running the stove full tilt. I checked the temps all around it with the infrared gun. With just a minimal amount of clearance I had no problem on the underneath side. It does have the back and wings on it to protect the sides however. Nothing got over 135. I've cooked waffles for like 2 hours with it running non stop and had no issues. I checked you album and didn't see a pic of the stove. I think the white gas does put out more BTU's than a propane however. I'd do a test first before you commit to an exact location. The size of the pan on the burner can deflect heat into the sides however, and if you are tucked in tight on the galley, a deflection system or a heat guard might be in order. Just an idea...Doug

Mine is just stored in the galley. I suppose I can use it in there but I don't. I take it out and use it on either the picnic table or an aluminum side table I have. Something about exposed flame and all that wood doesn't appeal to me. It's probably fine but I spent too much time wrestling that wood into a teardrop.

I don't like the idea of the stove in the galley when in use. So, I use a Coleman on a removable side table.

Here's a pic:

I'm less concerned about the fire hazard than I am with all the food smells - especially bacon grease - permeating my galley and acting as bear bait. If I cook in the galley (as opposed to on a picnic table) I wipe everything down with Windex when I'm done cooking for the day but it's still something of a concern.
