Gage or Anyone - Whats wrong with this Tear

Postby Classic Finn » Tue Oct 30, 2007 6:16 pm

I found this while searching on ebay

But I started laughing and noticed it looks out of place for a Vintage for some odd reason...

http://tinyurl.com/2e7mp3

Is it really sitting on its original frame?  Or could it be the rims and wheels? :scratchthinking:

Looks like it's on another frame, other than what was orig.

Here's what one should look like.

It almost looks like it is sitting on the rear section of an old pickup truck.

The originals had a whimpy pair of spindles welded to a thin piece of channel iron. This looks a lot tougher for off road although it probably adds quite a bit of weight to the unit. The way I look at it, the various parts add up to much more than the buy-it-now price and the reserve is probably set at $1150.00 Have you seen the price of aluminum lately? There's over $750 in metal alone plus the utility trailer under it is worth $500.00..............humm  That does it! I'm going for it before someone else does.

Got it........

That was easy. Now for the hard part. Anyone know of a pair of aluminum fenders for sale? Although I think the fenders on this trailer are original, they are butt ugly and need to go.

POSTED:

This pair of fenders is officially offered for sale as of now.

Those fenders are not orig. But you know that. Should be a good teardrop for your 'neck of the woods'. Let us know what it looks like up close once you get it to the shop. I'd pick it up for you if I wasn't going to be pulling another trailer next month. Going to Parker the 7th of Dec. for a get together.

Gage,

I'm not certain that they are originals, but I have seen a couple of Modernaire's with the exact same ugly fenders and supports. It could have been a special run. There was an exact copy of this trailer on Ebay a year ago in terrible shape with about six coats of house paint on it and it had the same fenders. At the time I remember thinking it was a rebuild using an original cabin. Besides.... I might have a better chance of selling these if they are original....just kidding ;)

Is there a teardrop gathering in Parker on the 7th of Dec? If so, I will definitely be there and bring the trailer.

but then I see them in my eyes as Original or as Close to Original as possible as are vintage cars or trucks..Not ripped apart, chopped or cut up..

Show us photos when you get done ok..

I agree, the fenders don't compliment the profile at all...

Congratulations on your new teardrop!

Classic Finn,

I agree, My plan is to lower the body either by using a modern torsion axel or using oversized wheels. Then put some Ford/Modernistic style fender on it; preferably aluminum but I might have to settle for fiberglass. Then I'll polish the bejabers out of it and line the interior with a nice hardwood veneer. Not quite "original" but comfy.... :)

BTW - Thanks for the "heads up" on this auction. I never would have ended up with this without you.

Thanks Rob,

This is my third attempt at purchasing one of these in halfway good shape and I am excited at the challenge of the restoration.

Got it home!

Postby deserthawk » Fri Nov 09, 2007 3:51 pm

I picked up the 47' Modernaire from Riverside, CA on Tuesday and started tearing into it the minute we got back to the desert. The inside is very clean but the outer body needs some TLC. First thing we did was get it off that frame.......here is the frame.
Image
Looks like some sort of truck frame with a front axle welded under it. Note these chopped and welded hubs with disc brakes. Image
It was a wonder I ever got it home at 75mph...yikes!
Here is the body sitting temporarily on another frame floor.
Image
Note how far forward the fenders were moved when mounted on the "new" frame. The plan is to build a reproduction of the original frame using a stronger full size axle and put fiberglass Cub/Ken-skill fenders on it. Should look good when restored.
