I lived in a town in Pennsylvania where they would designate a night other than October 31 for trick or treating. Never heard it called tin can night though, and it never made much sense to me.
I live in garden apartments, which is easy pickin's for trick-or-treaters, so we are usually swarmed, but there did not seem to be as many kids this year.
I do reverse trick-or-treating. I go out with my neighbors and our kids and take my candy with me. I hand it out on the road. No problems with thank you's. A few of the real little ones just kinda stared at me all speechless. I can't imagine why.......
