Looking For Suggestions, Gluing Cracked Plastic Fuel Tank

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Just a thought, but maybe try some PVC pipe cement. That stuff more or less melts the pipe together so it may be worth a shot.

Most plastic fuel tanks are made of cross linked polyethylene. best way to repair cracks is hot air welder and compatible plastic welding rod. If in fact that is what the tank is made of.

Danny-

Is this fitting that's split round?

Like could you slide a slightly larger piece of tubing over it and clamp it fast?

Cheers,

Coop

I hope this works :worship: . The guy at Shucks Auto suggested Permatex Cold Bond two part epoxy. The card said to use Isopropyl Alcohol to clean plastics and it's Gasoline resistant. They let me use an air nozzle to clean up the gas etc and I used lacquer thinner & the IA and sanded it to give it some tooth. The stuff smells nasty and I've got a headache to prove it :wacky . It's cured in 15 minutes and can be put into service in 16 hours. Only time will tell if this 1/4" crack will stay bonded. They will install the tank tomorrow if it holds. The OEM tank I found online isn't exactly the same one so it was fix or pay big bucks to the dealer. Thanks :applause: for all the help, :D Danny
It's the white fitting on the left.

I would make a Patch to cover the crack, at least a couple of inches , then use some good plastic glue, It will hold a lot better with a patch than just putting the glue into the crack, because the bigger the contact surface the better. Just my idea, but I worked as a mechanic for years.

Friday I slathered about 1/8" thickness of the glue all the way around the nipple and adjoining fitting. Now I'm waiting for them to re install the fuel tank. The manager said something about not having enough cars today so he had to send some guys home  . :) Danny

Checked my toolbox, and all the boxes with literature stashed in them, and couldn't find the paper I was talking about. I'll keep looking, hope what you did hols up. Working with plastic and gasoline is a bad combination. The glue we use for so many things won't adhere well because of the gas residue.
Some of the cleaners won't let the glue grip real well and the gas seeps out better than anything else.

So, I hope you had a great result and the leak is fixed. Going to plastic fuel tanks solved the rust problem, but created new ones.

Les, thanks for looking. If you do find it it would be great to order some for just in case.
My vehicle supposedly is going to be ready in the morning.
Time will tell if it holds, I have more time than money. :) Danny

The glue that was suppose to hold didn't  . Yesterday I found a junk yard that just got in a 2000 Blazer with only the front damaged. I paid the $108 they wanted for the fuel tank and after they tested the engine they removed the tank for me. They cut off the vapor recovery line so as not to damage the fitting that had a leak on mine  . Hopefully the mechanic will install the new used tank today. Driving my 5.7 liter pickup is getting pretty expensive on $3.13 gal gas comparatively and it will be nice to get the Blazer back. Thanks for all your help. :D Danny

I'm still waiting for my vehicle  . After they put 3 gallons of gas in the new tank and my additional 5 gallons they can't get it started. You can hear the fuel pump but the engine is not getting gas. BTW the mechanic broke my 5 month old fuel pump  so they put in a new one on the mechanics bill, not mine. The mechanic at the junk yard broke that one too :FNP . They said he will get dinged $100 off his pay check. This is one of the many reasons it's best to do your own work whenever possible. ;) I guess I should have taken it to NASSA they have rocket scientists and mechanics there. Danny

Another way to look at it is, if you worked on it yourself and broke the pump, you'd have to pay for that too.

Glad you found a used tank that worked out. All the used tanks I found were out of state, no one would ship a used tank.

Your absolutely correct. I was told Friday night I will be charged the $80 diagnostic charge plus an hour or so in labor. I'm patient since I have another vehicle to drive. I've always had 2 vehicles at a time since 1978, it really pays off in convenience and your never late to work. Danny
