Snake

Postby SmokeyBob » Mon Nov 05, 2007 4:09 am

Caught this Texas Rat Snake in my hallway last night. A little over 3 feet long. Earlier Lucy was barking at something behind our bed. I thought it might have been a mouse. Then around midnight she was barking at something behind some boxes in the hallway. When I went to investigate I could see part of this large snake behind this box. Then it went behind our book case. Knowing that snakes don't like the cold I got this Co2 fire extinguisher and sprayed it behind the book case. That slowed him down enough so I could catch him and put him in a cooler. If the Co2 didn't freeze him to death I'll turn him loose in the country tomorrow.

Boy I'm glade he wasn't in our bed. :worship:

This is a pic of a different rat snake but the one in my house looks like this one. About the same size.

Rat Snakes are fun. We have a few black rats at my farm that go near 6ft in length. They love to sun themselves on our back deck. It is really cool to look at them after they have eaten with a bulge moving slowly down their body.

Time to move! :(

I like the taste....just not the thought of one wondering in the house when sleeping!

Had a guy in the Marines that was from Arizona...he would catch those things all the time and cook them.

Black snake is very tasty - very much like frog legs only with a LOT more meat!

Spotting those when you aren't expecting it will sure get your heart pumping.

Are you sure you want to get rid of it? Do you have a problem with mice?

Be gentle with it. Those are good snakes.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

We had a snake in my suburban neighborhood, and, being the suburbs, my neighbors killed it with a shovel.

I don't know what kind of snake it was, but I knew it was not venomous. I tried to talk the dumass neighbors out of killing it, but they wouldn't listen. It looked kinda' like that rat snake in the photo, so I imagine that is what it was.

Another neighbor called animal control, but the snake was dead by the time they could get there. The animal control guy just shook his head in disgust. The idiots just couldn't wait -- they just had to kill it.

Sad thing is, we have a field rat problem in our neighborhood, and those pinheads killed a natural rat killer.

I commend Smokey Bob for his cool-headed response.

I don't mind snakes as long as they stay outside. When they come inside the rules of engagement change. As a kid I played with snakes all the time. At first I couldn't tell what type of snake it was, poisonous or non poisonous. The dog was going berzerk and Judith was about to have a heart attach. When I finally got a good look at it I told Judith there was a big Rat Snake in the house, should have said little.

My next dilemma was how to catch it with one hand and not get bitten. While rat snakes are non poisonous, they are not known for having a good disposition and they do have sharp teeth. Considering the type of prey they eat, mice, rats, etc. their bite can be infectious. Cold will slow reptiles down. I didn't think he would sit still while I threw ice on him so I thought why not use my Co2 fire extinguisher. That slowed him down, kinda like premature hibernation. I could now pick him up and put him in this small cooler.

The last I looked he was thawed out and a little pissed off. The snake is now on my witness protection list. He will be taken a very long way from the house and released.

Dog and Judith are now happy. :)
