A fence-jumping dog problem

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

You know, I do remember those harnesses that limit jumping. I was going to heighten the fence a couple of feet but that will involve alot of brush cleaning and cutting of trees............ lots of work. I'll try the harness thing first.

Our grandson's little beagle mix gets out by climbing the fire wood and jumping over. Quite a drop for such a small dog. We blocked her access under the gate so she took to jumping.

Unfortunately she found she couldn't get back in without help so we watched her. Now she hangs her pretty head when she forgets and goes over.   Yeah I know we are manipulated to no end.

Truth is they don't like to be locked out anymore than they like to be locked in as long as they are not looking for a lost owner.

My friend's Traci's dog keeps chewing through their satellite TV cable. Even with all the various chew toys, bones and stuff out there... He likes the cable better? She says it's the third time the TV has gone out now. There is only about 3 inches of cable left that isn't in conduit right at the dish, up on a pole... He still chewed it in half! Sometimes there is just no figuring out why dogs do what they do. :o

My dad's dog Dorris (german shepard and brittany spaniel mix) loves to jump the fence. We installed a wire around the perimiter (sp) of the yard and she wears a shock collar. The collar beeps when she gets a few feet from the wire before it shocks her. Once she figured it out she won't get near the fence. Cost about $200 at Home Depot,

OMG AND HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been looking at some of the ideas you guys have given me and pretty much gave the "thumbs down" to the no-jump harness. The wireless fence was looking like an option until I took Boomer out for his pee/poop break. A little dog behind my house was up against the fence being a curious dog. Well, Boomer was so enthralled with him or her, I don't know which, he ran and lept over a 5' high Honeysuckle fence like an equestrian horse!!!!!!!!

Luckily, by the time I got into my neighbors backyard his attention was still focused on the neighbor dog!!! I've never in my life saw a dog that could leap like that!!!

Man, this going to be worse than building a hatch............................ :x !!!!!!!!!!

Jeff you might want to train him for the "Trials." Jumpers are great to watch. You might try chaining him out of the fence and wait till he whines to get back in. Maybe be out playing in the fence.

My brother had this problem with one of his dogs and a 6 foot fence. He did the chicken wire thing and no go. She would hit it hard, it would bend, and off she would go. He thenn went to an expensive shock coller and after a couple weeks the dog (hodad) figured out it would stop shocking her once she was over and a few feet away. So for the next trick he went to the local bowling alley and talked them out of an old 11 pound ball, put a lag bolt into that, attached it to a small piece of chain (rope was chewed through), the other end to a harness and put on the dog. She never cleared the top of the fence again...

Some of the good-'ol-boys around here do the same thing with an old truck tires. The dogs can move around the yard, but they can't jump the fence. I bet some of these guys pitt bulls and rotweilers could get a bowling ball moving pretty fast? If they stopped suddenly the ball would mow 'em down? Is kind of a funny picture to imagine... Prolly a bit cruel though.

Actually Hodad was Half pitbull, half rottweiler... She could get the ball off the ground too, just not over the fence. And after several $90.00 trips to the pound to get her back, it was much more humane than tying her to a tree all day. She learned quickly to jump to the side when stopping...

When I was a kid I put a cat and a basket ball in one of those big mesh bags like grapefruit come in... It was a riot watching the shenannigins as that cat tried to run away from the ball and the ball mowed him down every time. My mother got all over me for being so mean. But, it was funny at the time.
