Trailer Source

Postby aggie79 » Wed Nov 07, 2007 2:05 pm

Please excuse this post if it is in the wrong location.

I'm trying to find a local welder or trailer constructor in the Fort Worth, Texas area to build a custom trailer for a TTT. I'd appreciate any suggestions/recomendations.

I'd check out 4wheel drive truck shops. When modifying a 4wd, a lot has to do with custom building bumpers, skidplates, roll cages, etc. I would think building a trailer would be considered too easy for them, but doable. Many people in the jeepin' wheeling industry will have a welder at home they use. So you may be going for a 1-off type of trailer.

I sort of did that for my ttt. I'm using a 2x3x.125 C channel from a M101 military trailer frame and I attached a boat trailer 2x3x.125 box tongue setup. I had a jeepin' friend with a home welder put it together.

Finished it about week ago with a center support bar down the middle to the second crossmember. Now I just need to get time to go to get the ttt out of storage.

You can do what I did, buy the axle and materials and cut them down (you can rent an abrasive saw). You can mock the frame up on the floor of the garage (upside down). Then take it to any welder to weld togehter.

Both good ideas! Thanks!

It's been awhile but I have worked with structural metals. I'm okay with cut-off saws, grinders, cutting torches, etc. However, I don't trust my welding skills. I think I'll fab the steel in the garage and take the frame parts somewhere to get welded.

Thanks spinnernut. I'll probably take you up on the offer when I get to that point.

Right now, I am in design mode and specifically trying to balance what I want versus what my wife wants. (That's probably another whole thread.) Where the design seems to be going is toward a larger TD or a semi-standy TTT.

This will put the trailer in the 5'-6" to 6' wide x 10' to 11' long plus tongue length range. I plan to use a torsion axle, probably with electric brakes. Since the design will be long I am thinking about a folding or removable tongue because I need to store the trailer in the garage.

I don't know if we can make it, but my wife and I are trying to get to the Inks Lake gathering to meet everyone and to get design ideas from all the great TD's I seen built in this region.

Thanks again.
