Don, things have changed, or maybe it’s just different between the services. We (Army senior enlisted) are all on an “Indefinite Status”. When an E-6 or above with more than 10 years in reenlists, they must reenlist for an indefinite contract. After that there is no more reenlisting or extending. The Army rules are…No Soldier can turn down a promotion, however, I could submit retirement in lieu of the promotion and I would have to retire one year from the day I submitted…. But, retirement is a request and can be denied. I am in a shortage job and my retirement will not be approved until I fulfill my two year requirement for promotion.
Trust, me I have been over this with my career field managers. I am in a catch 22 situation. They have me and if I fuss about it to much I will be labeled a malcontent and not a team player. There are only 42 Sergeants Major (E-9) in my field. On Fort Drum, I will be one of only six MSGs in my MOS.
