Front Hitch

Postby raprap » Fri Nov 16, 2007 1:23 pm

Just ordered a front trailer hitch for my trusty Dakota. My mom frmarked "A front hitch!" and I responded yeah "Its for pushing trailers on the interstate, so I can take both the teardrop and the smoker trailer to Colorado."

Actually, I figure it is easier to manuever trailers into tight positions facing forward and I can put one of them platforms on front of the truck to dissuage deer and carry some extra gear and/or a bicycle.

What I'm asking is, how many of un's have front hitches? Iff'n any of y'all have one is it handy, or have I just wasted a C note.

At the sailboat club we have a tractor with a front hitch for moving the boats around the yard. Made life easier. I plan on for for my JEEP at some point once I replace my front bumper.

they are great for mounting hitch mount winches if your so inclined to get yourself stuck from time to time. Or, They also have the hitch mount hooks for tow ropes when your pulling stumps or trees or someone else out of a mudhole. Or... I've created a hitch mount scooter carrier that could handle any small motorcycle.

A good investment depending on how redneck you feel for that day. :)

Rap, it is much easier to push a trailer frontwards, then to back it in, but i'm not sure it's worth a ben franklin to do it..

It depends on where you want your trailer backed into

If you have a fairly long wheelbase vehicle and you wanted to back several hundred yards back into the woods, around trees and obstacles then you'll think your $100 was very well spent the first time you use it

It's 20 times easier to 'back' a trailer with a front hitch as with the one on the rear because you can move the hitch ball nearly sideways almost instantly just by turing the wheels . . . . not possible to do with the hitch on the rear because the rear wheels don't steer

I'm planning to put a front hitch on my pick up, but mostly to use as a winch mount and bike carrier.

I've been moving trailers around for 35 years and never needed one or thought one would help in that respect. I push aircraft with a front hitch at work every day, and it is nice to see where you are going without turning around, but the I'm pushing them several hundered yards at a time, and they are a little bigger than a teardrop.

Many moons ago as a teenager I worked at an apple orchard. When backing the hay wagon which had a front turning axle, it was easier to hook to the front of the tractor. The two wheeled trailers we always backed with the rear hitch, you get quicker response with a front hitch, but quicker is not always better. After some practice in an open area backing into spots marked with pylons you will be surprised how good you get in a short time.

Just a 2 cent opinion.

That's all we use to move boats around the boat yards and in and out of the water. There is no easier way to move trailers around, in my opinion (well, unless you get someone else to do it).

It depends on how well you can back a trailer on if you wasted a C-note..

Just picked one of those flat cargo carriers for the front hitch. Checked with the state constabulatory on the use and was told as long as I didn't carry anything to obstruct the headlights all I needed was a pair of warning (yellow) lights at each corner since it protrudes out in front of the front bumper.

Now's all I need to do is put some 3" PVC pipe on the leading edge of the cargo carrier to carry bait casting rods load up a cooler for bait and beer and I'll be ready to camp on Cape Hattaras.
