Gass mileage question.

My brother is thinking about buying a 1982 Fleetwood Tioga it is probably 19’ on a Chevy chassis class-C MH.

Any have an idea as to what kind of gas mileage to expect from this rig? I’m thinking between 5 and 10 MPG.

His main reason for getting it is for trips to Canada so there is plenty of room for 4 of us, and when we go to Carolina Beach, NC he and his wife can bring there boy’s.

I personally don’t think it is worth buying due to the gas prices; we could drive to where we fish in Ontario and stay in a cabin for the week for near the same money. Although I do think it would be more fun in the MH, as for the trip and such, just not sure it is worth it in the long run.

It is super nice on the inside, the exterior needs some scrubbing but overall a nice motor home.

I know this is a Teardrop forum, but thought some of you might have some experience with a class-C mh.

Saw a fairly new, clean one on the side of the road today for sale that was marked down from 13600 to 8600. When we saw it I told Cathy that I suspected it would go for about half that if it sold at all.

Jeff my Dad has a 26ft classc Chevy chassis I think. I used it once & it got 6 miles to the gallon. This was about 5 years ago when gas was a lot cheaper. I would hate to try a long trip in it now . I read today that we can expect 4.00 bucks a gallon by summer

Jeffro, I'd tell him not to buy it. In '82, the speed limit was 55 MPH and I'd bet the thing wouldn't go 65 with the pedal to the floor!! I'd suggest buying a conversion van or renting an RV for the trip to Canada.

Thanks guys, I agree. I spoke to him again this evening and told him I just don’t think it is worth buying, with gas prices being what they are and like Brick said put the insurance on top of that I think it would just be a money pit. Also I guess my gestimate was about right for the between 5 and 7 MPG, I know that I said between 5 and 10 earlier but I told him I would guess between 5 and 7.

Boodro I’m with yah brother, our Canadian neighbors are paying $0.93 to $1.14 a liter now in Ontario and one place in Sioux Lookout it is $116.6 a liter.

That equals $3.53 to $4.45 a gallon now for them.

I have had motor homes and just never found them practical. Remember, it's not only inefficient, it's another vehicle to maintain and insure. I would say get a travel trailer if he has something able to tow it.

I'm not sure how much delay there is between the UK and US transmissions of the British motoring programme 'Top Gear' - but no doubt you'll be able to get it off YouTube within an hour or so - you might enjoy the last 10 minutes of the latest edition as they go in for some motorhome racing.

Given the likely slump in values of old gas motorhomes, racing them seems like a sensible alternative.....

Thanks everyone, my little brother came over to talk to me this evening about it again. I think he is going to buy it, I have suggested a few different options, along with the pros and cons of each. But all in all it’s his money and decision.

Looks like we will be camping and fishing on Lake Nippissing this summer via a motor home, it should be fun.

That's some crazy racing... did you notice the frypan defence

In the second clip, aside from the car in the 'garage', I think the temperature sensitive lighting in the faucet was the coolest feature.
