Adware problems

Postby Mark72 » Sat Nov 17, 2007 10:41 am

HELP!! Pop ups like crazy becoming more aggressive all the time. I've installed search and destroy but I can't seem to get it rooted out of my computer! I started having problems after a firefox update that didn't load properly and threw up some error messages. Anyone else had this problem?

I don't have that problem. I just had a Fire Fox update also. What are the popups that you see? That might tell you what needs to be done to get rid of them. I use Spybot S&D, Adaware, SpywareGuard, and Popup Popper.

Popup Popper is just always there in the background and when a new window wants to open it asks if you want to allow it or not. Tell us what the popup boxes say.

You can try AVG Anti-Spyware and do a 'Complete System Scan'. When ever I start getting lots of SPAM (not popup by the way) it finds a gets rid of lots of spying cookies and such. Just might be your problem. AVG Anti-virus (free addition) is excellent to.

There are lots of things to check and it is just to hard to explain over the internet. You may be better off taking it to a repair shop and have them clean it of viruses and spyware!!!

Mark,

My little brother's computer gets like that from time to time. We end up wiping the hard drive and letting him start over.

I on the other hand have finally been converted over to the Mac side. We went to Microcenter a couple months ago and bought a Mac Mini. I installed Thunderbird and Firefox, and remapped the Ctrl key to the Command key, and I've been a happy camper ever since. Oh yea, I use a KVM switch and have ready access to my Wintel as well. However, unless I am doing CAD, I find that I don't need my Wintel.

I use Adaware, AVG, and CCleaner. There is also a thing called Housecall which is online. Really handy if you think a virus has hijacked things and it has picked up stuff that the others haven't.

Here is the source on the last one. I'm not computer savvy enough to know what it means. Anyway they are all advertisments for you name it. They seem to be working from my explorer program and have now advanced to loading full pages. the most common says from internet speed.

Back up all your important files to a USB drive, and wipe your hard disk, and start over. Your computer is too far gone!

have you scanned for spy ware? Adware is free for personal use. Give it a shot, it can't hurt.

Would this be internet speed monitor popups? I found a complaint about that here. http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.ph ... opic=13890
It was removed with a program called "combo fix" but the first thing to do before that is run updated Adaware. I think there is a link to it in the last post.

I don't use any virus checkers or spyware/adware checkers and I never see any of those nastys. Of course, I also don't use Micro$oft Windoze.

Mark, What a bummer

Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy. They are both free and together they usually do the job, Being that they are free, you need to run them manually. If that doesn't do the trick you might have to redo the hd

Got it fixed! 12 hours with no pop ups. The best part is I done it by myself! Spybot search and destroy didn't find it to be a problem but there was a program called Internet speed monitor installed on my computer that I knew nothing of. I uninstalled it and there have been no problems since! back to undisturbed browsing.

YEP .. we went through that about three weeks ago.... had to pay Norton 99 bucks to fix it but I havent had a problem since then. I could have wiped the harddrive but couldnt keep the adware off long enough to be able to back up some of our pictures. we didnt care about any of the other junk............If you have an antivirus and antispyware program, if you didnt keep it updated, then something has probably penetrated into the depths of your computer... (wow that sounded good... that is the gibberish my tech guy said) anyway, you can call your antispyware programs techie and they may can remove it for you..... it was kinda cool to watch the Norton people clean my machine via their tech office...... good luck......
