GUNS

Postby CPASPARKS » Tue Nov 20, 2007 1:59 pm

I heard a comedian say once....

How come the people who are against guns are the same people that need to be shot?

Hello everyone. Just a quick note and a pic of my very first buck. I shot two does my first year (2 years ago) but had never seen a buck on a watch. I fired at one last week while chasing but it was more to get him going than anything. Then, I passed on a small 6 pointer in my tree stand at home after the gang was done for the day. It was only Wednesday and I figured if he was still around in week two I would take him. Well, he was hanging at the neighbor's camp the next night. Duh! Anyway, yesterday, I was on a watch (I mostly chase) and I was tired and cold after a long day. I saw movement ahead of me, coming around the corner of a marsh. I first saw a body and then I saw bones. He was moving pretty quick to my left, just inside the edge of a redpine plantation. As he was about to pass me, at about 50 yards, I yelled "Meeee". He stopped dead in his tracks. I put the scope up, saw the shoulder and fired. He never moved or even flinched. He stared straight ahead. I figured I had missed him. I levered another round and fired again. Nothing. Then, as I levered the 3rd round he did a standing 180 and headed back from where he came. I fired a third shot but knew I wasn't close to hitting him. I waited a few seconds. I could see pretty well to both sides, right and left, where he would go if I had missed but saw nothing. I waited another minute but couldn't wait any longer. I stepped over the log I was leaning against and took a few steps. I look ahead and saw a brown mound ahead of me, maybe 20 yards away. I thought it might be him. As I approached, he made one last flick of the head and that's when I saw his very nice 8pt rack. I couldn't believe it. My first buck. I'm sure the guys in the next county heard me. He dressed out at 173 lb, so not a bruiser, but a definite trophy for me. He will take a prominent place on my currently bare trophy wall as "My First Buck".

Good shootin' Cleave!! What did you pop him with, a lever-action .30-06? My first deer (a doe) was back in high school and I shot her with a .30-.30 Winchester lever gun that my Grandpa had given me. My first shot missed the target............... I was crackin' off rounds as she bounded off. Looking back, it probably looked like I was in a John Wayne movie  !!!!

My first buck was an Oklahoma 8-pointer about 10 years ago ........... alot less lead flying for that one but still had the same amount of adrenaline!! Deer season in Kansas starts tomorrow morning (Nov. 28) but I won't get out until this weekend. Maybe I can get one of those NE Kansas bucks I always see the bigshots on ESPN land...............

Thanks! I'm using a 1962 Winchester Model 88 .308. It's my first and only rifle. It works great!

Congratulations Cleave!!!! We took our annual hunt for Sitka Blacktails the last week of October. Unfortunately, after several good years, 200 inches of snow last year decimated the herds. We passed on the deer, focused on fantastic remote Alaska lake cutthroat trout fishing, and had a very nice time indeed.

For me...its the getting out, comradery with good friends, and hey...if you get a nice buck like that...braggin rights are up for next year!!!!

big deer

Postby prohandyman » Wed Nov 28, 2007 7:26 am

I fish and hunt too. and get lots of grief from people that don't. And I usually can talk the talk supporting hunting most times. But what really escapes me is the overwhelming desire to get the biggest fish, the biggest deer. It is all most sportsmen and women talk about. So, I guess I will fuel the fire with the following pic! Maybe a new record in Indiana!
Not mine by the way!

Spadman, I picked up this one for deer hunting. It only cost me $250 at Mill's Fleet Farm. $250 might seem expensive but considering it has a 12 gauge shotgun barrel, a high powered rifle barrel, and a muzzleloader barrel, I thought it was a bargain.

:o that IS a good deal...now to talk the little wifey into splitting with the $250! that is exactly what i was thinking. save the moolah by going modular! i think single shot break over is a great way to go as well. i have an 8mm mauser, but i don't want to carry around a 9lb. plus rifle.
hey south cental people, wanna trade? i will barter with you for a good rifle. i don't mind refinishing it or updating it but i am no gunsmith so it does have to be salvagable. i don't think i spelled that right.
