Cooking for Thanksgiving

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby JunkMan » Thu Nov 22, 2007 9:42 am

This will be the first time in over a dozen years that I'm not making the turkey. Had to work this morning, and come back again this evening :(

Of course, the good news is that since I am working, I don't have to help clean the house :D

Sounds like an army of cooking going on, and some wonderful sounding food--even the go to a restaurant choices.

I'm off to take a shower and load up my Buttermilk pie to go eat. I'm hooking up the trailer and taking it with me to show folk what I have been building the last two years. I've explained it dozens of times and they still don't get it. Imagine their amazement when they see that little mattress in a box.

I hope all of you have a restful (after the feeding frenzy) holiday. And let's all say a thankful prayer for those loved ones in service who can't sit at the tables with us. May they safely hurry home soon.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Having dinner at my youngest daughter's house... cooked all day yesterday with my girls. That is one of our favorite times... the day before Thanksgiving is girls day.....cooking, listening to christmas music and just having a wonderful time of fellowship. My 11 month old granddaughter joined in the tradition yesterday...... cooked three pumpkin pies, one pecan, one walnut cake, one buttermilk pie, 6 mini tart chocolate cream pies, cornbread and biscuits for the dressing, pink stuff, corn casserole, and blah blah blah!..... feasting today and taking food over to their dad's house since his wife is sick...... gonna be a long day but fun.

We're doing the whole spread at my house. We've got some family coming over and a few friends.

The menu is as follows:
Turkey (it's smoking on the Big Green Egg as I type)
Gravy
Cornbread Stuffing
Mashed Potatoes
Green Bean Casserole
Cauliflower au Gratin
Cranberry Sauce
Pumpkin Pie

I'm guessing we'll have leftovers.

There are no pics, but this year my sons cooked dinner for us.

Turkey.
Dressing.
Mashed potatoes.
Brown gravy.
Corn.
Black-eyed peas.
Apple and pumpkin pie.
Cranberry sauce.
Fruit salad.
Water or milk or tea or soda.

They did all this this morning, and it was wonderful.
Best of all, though, is the leftovers are put away and the dishes done already.

Just got back from my friend's family gathering. Full to the gills. The downside is I only came away with a baggie of turkey for a sandwich. It's a good thing I only took one of the pies I made.

Now who is the closest on this forum with leftovers? Should I drive 200 miles to Austin and invade Lynn's fridge?

Well, we're back home.. did some shoppin' then Cracker Barrel was packed but very yummy ! Only thing is my son opted to be untraditional and have peppered trout! haha

Then fought the battle at Garden Ridge, only spent $28 so that's a good thing! All gingerbread stuff -- haha !!!

Just think if we were having a gathering with Dave & Cindy's turkey and Lynn's turkey and Steve's brisket and Todah's sweet potatoes and Gary & Trudy's dutch oven cobblers and Tony's margarita's .... we'd all be sleepy by the campfire right now. .... It's cold here in OKC, about 40*.

The kids and I have already inhaled our care package... Maybe I can swing by there tomorrow for another slice...

...well the turkey(first I ever cooked inna oven) came out perfect, the ham was delish, the stuffing recipe I have been working on for a couple or three years was great as was the poato salad, sweet taters and all the rest...I earned major brownie points from the wife(aka the poor girl) for having dinner ready when she got up at 5 to get ready for work...of course I had to buy the pumpkin pie but it was pretty good as well, considering it was store bought......hey Tony, come on over, we have enough left overs for a LARGE group and I still have a half a bottle of Reposado left as well :D ;)

Madjack--on my way!

I wish. Sounds like some coma inducing leftovers. And I've know people who work on their dressing for a couple of hours, but three years?! The bread crumbs don't have to be that old. Bet it's tasty, though.

...bread crumbs  :? ...wuddaya think I ma a yankee...we don't use no stinkin' bread crumbs but rather CORN BREAD and of course, I don't use a recipe...4years ago, I decided to make dressing for our semi-annual "Orpans Day" dinner, where we cook up a big ol' meal for all of our single friends who have no family to go to for a "special" meal....it left a lot to be desired...the next year was not mcuh better, then last year, I finally figured it out and just about have nailed down...cornbread, sausage, dressing mix, onions, garlic, a few jalapenos and various and sundry herbs...mmm mmm mmm....
