Ready to pull it? Watch where those wires are

Postby Ron Dickey » Sun Dec 02, 2007 12:08 am

There is domb and domber.... I fall in there somewhere.... I pluged my trailer to my truck and went out to camp. went out had a great time and came back started to leave with it several weeks later to show to a freind and pull it out stopped to check the lights and no lights. I looked closer at the wires and
one was cut off and the other were damgaged from truning the trailer. they went over the top but I guess hung in the wrong places.

I still have not gotten it fully fixed. make sure you put them all where you can get at them so it you have to troubleshoot you can do so with eaz.

If worse happens I will have to re wire the intire trailers. So BE carefule that you do it not only right the first time but that you can get at them in an emergancy.
I have a friend who has his boat trailer rewired every 10 yrs.

So Plan it out. carfully

Good advice – been there before and usually on the day when we are getting ready to pull out for a trip. Check the lights – None – surprise! And now for some much needed under the trailer wiring hacking!

When I set up the wiring harness, I intentionally left it long because the wife's SUV had a plug inside that you stuck out of the hatch. When I tow it with my truck, it is long because the plug is right there at the reciever. I have to drape it over the tongue jack to keep it off the ground.

Of course, Murphy struck and the wire fell off during a turn. I ended up dragging the wire for a few miles. By the time I noticed it was too late, it had rubbed all the way thru one conductor and almost thru another. I was able to fold the wire on itself so the wires could make contact, it wasn't too big of a deal but it was annoying.

Something like the black corrugated split tube over wires goes a long way to protect them... Its available at most home improvement stores and hardware and autoparts in wiring isles.... The larger diameter of tube make it harder for ball/hitch to grab wire and chew on it...

I also try to retain wire at top of ball (yes on top- not a mistype) by putting wire through loop formed in spring clip used as lock for coupler keeps wiring up and will keep then for damage (dragging) unless you do a extreme "jackknife" of rig and by that time you will have extreme toungue, hitch and bumper damage...

Electrical tape is good for holding your harness where you want it, out of harm's way. Just run your harness along a safe "route". Then use electrical tape to hold it there. Kinda like nylon wire ties, but use tape instead. It is very easy to cut off with a pocket knife when you get where you are going, and want to un-hitch. I've done this for years, and never had a failure yet.
