Things that don't fit anywhere else...

you might be from Wisconsin if...

Postby packerz4 » Sun Dec 09, 2007 10:58 am

got this email from my sister today. thought you'd get a laugh out of it. it is SOOOOOOOOO true.
*********************************************************
YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRUE WISCONSINITE WHEN:

1. Your idea of a traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a tractor on the highway.

2. "Vacation" means going up north past Hwy 8 for the weekend.

3 You measure distance in hours. (doesn't everyone?)

4. You know several people who have hit deer more than once. (i have)

5. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day and back again.

6. Your whole family wears Packer Green to church on Sunday. (even during lent our Pastor will wear green under his Purple cloth)

7. You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.

8. You see people wearing camouflage at social events (including weddings and funerals ). & Packer stuff.

9. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked. (until about 5 years ago didn't even know where the keys were & the lights are so you can see wildlife i.e. deer, skunks, coons, drunk neighbor who's not allowed in his house for the night and needs a place to sleep it off.)

10. You think of the major food groups as beer, fish, and venison.

11. You carry jumper cables in your car and your wife or girlfriend knows how to use them. (might need to help someone)

12. There are 7 empty cars running in the parking lot at Mill's Fleet Farm at any given time. (hard on car not to warm it up)

13. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. (yep)

14. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

15. You refer to the Packers as "we."

16. You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction.

17. You can identify a southern or eastern accent.

18. You have no problem pronouncing Lac Du Flambeau.

19. You consider Minneapolis exotic.

20. You know how to polka. (doesn't everyone?)

21. Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your blue spruce.

22. You were unaware that there is a legal drinking age.

23. Down South to you means Illinois .

24. A brat is something you eat. (love Johnsonville, God Bless Sheboygan)

25. Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new pole shed. (that's the best, and you discuss future projects we can do in it.)

26. You go out to fish fry every Friday (i didn't know everyone didn't do this until i was a freshman in college and went to florida over spring break to play ball for the U. no Haddock, Perch, or Wallegy on friday? sinful!)

27. Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.

28. You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

29. You find minus twenty degrees "a little chilly."

30. If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 38 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in Wisconsin.

31. If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because Park Falls is the coldest spot in the nation, you might live in Wisconsin

32. If you have ever refused to buy something because it's "too pricey," you might live in Wisconsin .

33. If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in Wisconsin .

34. If someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don't work there, you might live in Wisconsin .

35. If your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead, you might live in Wisconsin .

36. If you may not have actually eaten it, but you have heard of Head Cheese, you might live in Wisconsin. (mom makes it, dad eats it. YUCK)

37. If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you might live in Wisconsin . (i have done this)

38. If you have either a pet or a child named "Brett," you might live in Wisconsin . (new God-son is named BRETT!!)

39. If most of your Christmas Tree is decorated in Green & Gold, and Packer everything.

40. If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in Wisconsin .

41. If you have had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Wisconsin .

42. If you know how to say Oconomowoc, Waukesha , Menomonie & Manitowoc, you might live in Wisconsin .

43. If every time you see moonlight on a lake, you think of a dancing bear, and you sing gently, "From the land of sky-blue waters,"...you might live in Wisconsin.

44. winter statistic.....
98% OF AMERICANS SAY 'OH SH_T' BEFORE GOING IN THE DITCH ON A SLIPPERY ROAD.

THE OTHER 2% ARE FROM WISCONSIN AND THEY SAY, 'HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS.'

;)

I grew up in northern Wisconsin, but moved out to Utah after college. This made me laugh out loud. I had to tell my husband a few of them, too. Here's my score:

2: We lived north of Highway 8. "Down south" was anything below Hwy 8. (See #23)

3. Yup. It was an hour and a half to Duluth and 3 1/2 to Minneapolis, those exotic, big cities (see #19).

4. Yes. My dad even had a pair of antlers and broken car parts from one of these encounters mounted so they could hang on the wall.

5. A/C? Nobody has A/C in the part of Wisconsin I'm from.

8. My last trip home to Wisconsin was for my niece's wedding. The wedding party rode 4-wheelers to the lake-side wedding location, and the mother and father of the bride wore camo. We were seriously overdressed in Gore-tex.

9. Yes, this is my sister's place.

10. You forgot another major food group - bear.

11. I still carry jumper cables and have used them.

13. We do this in Utah, too.

16. I thought it was almost winter, winter, still winter, and bug season.

17. Yes.

18. And "Chequamegon" and "Namekagon".

19. See #3.

20. A favorite thing to do in college was go to one of the local polka bars.

23. Wausau and Milwaukee are "down south". See #2.

24. I still insist on Johnsonville. Thankfully we have them out here in Utah, too.

26. This is a tradition for my sister and her family.

29. As a kid, I remember going for a nature walk with my family to the "Bog". It was New Year's Day and 20 below.

30. My brother-in-law does this.

31. Park Falls was "down south". See #23.

33. Yes, it was. We had to go to the polka bar instead.

35. Even though my dad's been gone now for almost 10 years, I can still picture his suntan lines. Don't forget the ones on the arms at the T-shirt line.

36. I know what it is, but never ate it either. Yuck!

37. Yes. No sense getting carried away if you're just walking to the mailbox.

40. Actually, we had 3 bars and one church.

42. No problem. See #18, too.

43. Just reading this one made me start humming the tune. Or if you had a T-shirt that read "Point Beer - it's not just for breakfast anymore".

Thanks for the laugh, tk!

Conversely, for those of us living on the Gulf Coast, "Up north" is anyplace north of Interstate 10

As Justin Wilson swore on his album - "I'm not from down south . . . . I'm from up no'th"

"Oh, yeah? What part de no'th you from?"

"Shreveport"

A 'Yankee' is anyone from north of I-10 . . . . a 'Damn Yankee' is one who came down and won't go back home ;)

I gotta tell you:

Except for the cold weather part, that list makes the place sound pretty cool! Except for the Sheboygan mention:

In the 80s, had a bad experience with those nuts who own Kohler.
Here we go again!

Wisconsin West and North

Postby GaryfromCrocus » Tue Dec 11, 2007 1:20 pm

Head cheese is not the greatest hazard. This territory is noted for Norwegian suppers featuring lutefisk. This delicacy is salted, dried codfish which has been soaked in lye to remove the salt and has a texture of jelly. I take a small (microscopic ?) serving for politeness and watch with awe the people who heap their plates with a third helping. Local Co-op stores in Southern Saskatchewan sell lutefisk in 50 pound boxes.

And therein lies the secret...if you boil the heck out of it, like most people do, it is nasty, nasty, nasty! Smelly fish flavored Jello.

But bake it and you will have a whole different experience - nice and flaky. Served up with drawn butter.

Now granted, I was raised on the North Atlantic and cut my first teeth on fried clams and lobster, so I like most things fish-like. I probably would never have even tried lutefisk if I hadn't married into it and was just being polite for the sake of my future husband and inlaws. But, 26 years and many lutefisk opportunities later, I can say that I now choose to eat it but ONLY when it is prepared well (Does that mean I'm a lutefisk snob?)

I feel a hijack coming here, but it's gotta be said. Ira, if you come up to "Cooler Near The Lake" in late April I will guarantee you a place to camp and a whole new outlook about this area. The 80s are over. The cold goes away but the fun stays forever.

In Minnesota, it's pickups...how else do you get out to your ice fishing house?

And that's how we would look for spring...when your town parks a vehicle on the lake and everyone places bets on which day it will finally break through the ice.

I always heard that Wisconson had 9 months of winter and 3 months of bad sledding. I love this thread, I was a truck driver for a while and I have been all over the U.P., Wisconson and Minnisota in all weather conditions. I have been to most of those towns listed and a lot that were not. Used to crack me up going through some small towns in the winter and seeing as many snowmobiles as you did cars on the roads. I saw the movie " Grumpy Old Men " and saw the people driving their cars out on the lakes. Well I here to tell you I've seen it in person, quite a shock for a Missouri boy. All in all very neat country and I would love to take my wife up to Rhinelander in the winter. Thank you for rekindling those memories.
If you want to hear God laugh just tell him your plans.

Here's one a friend of mine told me he did as a kid in Wisconson...
Gather up 30-40 pheasant like chord wood on frozen morning, toss 'em in the cellar, open the cellar door when you get home from school and watch 'em take off.
(Told me their hoods get frozen shut and they can't open their eyes)
