Hammerite Direst To Rust Metal Paint test

Postby Muggnz » Sat Jun 09, 2007 4:34 am

Since I had the resources for this test already created. And not worth selling.
I thought it'd be interesting to see how long it'd take for the painted wheel rim to start rusting. To give me some idea how long a similarly painted trailer chassis would last before turning to a 4 letter swear word.

I stripped all the rust I could from it using a wire brush attached to my electric drill. FWIW I removed the dust left behind, with tap water. It was then left to dry for a week, before receiving 3 coats of Hammerite.

The rims are currently resting on a bench in my back yard, exposed to worst the weather can do.

The paint is already dry, so if you like watching it dry, this probably isn't for you.

Hey Muggnz,

The can says it's 5 year paint. Are you going to post a picture every day for the next 5 years so we can see the deterioration?

It will be interesting to see how it holds up.

Joanne

I figure that a new set of pictures every 3 months for the first 5 years, should suffice. It may even prove to be a massive overkill.

However I would support anyone wanting to take them on a daily basis. Any volunteers?

I believe that they are mini rims. It has "3.5Bx10x24" stamped on it.

It looks like hens teeth are somewhat more frequently found over here. As they were frequently put on caravans & campomatics. They weren't hard to find, taking me a month or so, including tyres & new inner tubes.

however the pix were taken on the 3 month anniversary.

The growth on the unpainted rim continues.

It look as though you may have got the start of some new rust appearing - in the join between the rim and the wheel centre?

I had the 30-year-old steel wheels of my Morris Minor grit-blasted and epoxy coated and they just started to discolour in that very spot after a couple of years.

There really is no way to get the metal clean right into the joint between the two parts, so one day the rust will come back there.

The join between the rim and the wheel centre seems ok. It is however, covered by the old ( original? ) paint.

So far it looks like the rim will fail first, as it's paint has vanished.

You know... have you considered setting up a web-cam on them. "View the amazing Rust-Cam... See solid metal dissolve before your very eyesllll Only 29.95 per month subscription fee!!!!"

I've used a product before called POR-15. It does an outstanding job of converting rust back into solid metal, which then can be painted. One of the few products that I've ever seen that actually worked as promised.

Speaking of rust and overcoming it, has anyone ever used a product called Conquest? We use it at work and I've used it at home, it is a good product. It is a rust converter. Just wire brush the worst off and paint it on. It is not thick like a paint, but it does work. It doesn't seal the metal, so you need to paint over it. I have found it hard to find though. I get it from work.

Steve,

Would you be my first subscriber?

I've heard of POR-15 . And it is available locally. But only during mon-fri 8-5 bus hours. And this itsn't do-able for me. So I chose a product which seemed reliable & a lot easier to buy AND cheaper.
