gathering for hot August 08?

I'm trying to think of a semi cool place for camping in August.
Typically 100* and humid in Oklahoma, this past August took a motorcycle ride out to Red Rock Canyon and could feel the temperatures dropping as we got off the highway and headed down into the canyon. Pleasant!!!!! There is nice camping there but of course no big lake.
I could check into it, it's not far off I-40 near Hinton, OK. I know they do not take reservations.

Is it a cool place at Palo Duro Canyon over by Amarillo? I don't know anything about it .

Julie,

The only place that will be cooler that time of year is up at high altitude. That being said, the only place that I know of in this part of the country is the Davis Mountains in West Texas. Granted it is a long way out there, but there is a very nice State Park there.

We were WAY up on the mountain at Petit Jean , ARK. last July and it was hotter than youknowwhat!!!

I thought down in a canyon might be cooler , with the rocks and the heat going up and above the rocks.

I haven't camped at Red Rock but know how much cooler it felt on the motorcycle there in August last year.

I'll do some checking after Jan 1.

Mt Magazine, the highest point in AR is 2753 ft above sea level. The Davis Mountains average well over 5000 ft above sea level, with the highest peak above 8300 ft.

The canyons, especially during the day, should be hot. Ever thought about why people go to the mountains in the summer?

Wouldn't it be possible that a canyon being surrounded by mountains would be cooler for the cooler air would settle down at the bottom?
When I lived in Littleton Co., while driving during the summer near dusk, you could feel the colder air in low areas in the roads. The air seemed to settle down in there.
Just my thoughts.

So, by that reasoning, Death Valley should be the coldest spot in the country?????

That's what I've noticed too ... even last Sept very late like midnight and on a motorcycle on the way to a casino and although it was summer, we'd come to a lower valley kind of place on the highway (and everybody thinks Oklahoma is flat!) and I could feel a chilll...

I'll ask around to some folks that may have camped at Red Rock or Palo Duro and see what they say .....

What about camping in the Ozarks near Branson or Eureka Spring or Table Rock Lake areas. They are cooler at that time of the year.

Of course I live in a river valley so the humidity is normal for me.


Just a thought and it is near the time Schools are getting back in session.

I have camped at Red Rock a couple of times, but never in August. Once, in March, we stayed in the group cabins. The first morning we woke up to snow! The next afternoon, it rained. And the next day, all the kids in my Camp Fire group got sunburned noses while rappelling on the cliffs.
The second time , in May, we stayed in tents, and it rained and rained and rained. Its a nice place, some trails, a pool, lots of shade. Don't know how hot it would be in August.
Haven't camped in Palo Duro, but have visited in the summer. It's hot. Or maybe just on the days we were there.

Whatever you decide, some of us will show up. It's just our nature.
