Generator smack again

Postby Randy77301 » Thu Dec 27, 2007 10:43 pm

OK, forgive my ignorance..... On the side of the box,,,,, "UST " generator, it sais 1200 watts.
1000 watts continouis and 1200 watts surge.

So, if an a/c runs at 1200 watts, and needs 1800 at start up, does that mean this generator will carry it?

Do they make a 5000 btu a/c?

I think I answered my own question, I found a 5150 btu a/c at Sears. and it stated it needs 530 watts to run,,,
Now I think this little generator will run that.....am I on the right page?

1000 watts will not run it. Usually it takes 3X the power to start the compresser.
I have amped my petcool out. 400 BTU's
It takes 2.4 amps to run it but when the compressor starts it uses 7.9 amp, pretty much close to the limit for a 1000.

You don't know what the limit's are until you take it there.ImageImageImage

I tried an experiment with my 5000btu window shaker. I put a clamp meter on it and short cycled the compressor (worst case scenario) to see if my generator could handle it. It pulled a tad over 19A, the generator didn't like it but it kept going.

BTW: I have a 2000W Kipor.

I hate to say it but spend the money for a Honda 2000. Quiet and it'll last.

personally, I wouldn't go for the 1000w gennie as it is too restrictive and will not properly run a 5Kbtu window shaker and odds are it won't run your coffee maker or the wife's hair dryer and probably not even your skil saw...I would reccomend a 2k Honda(about 900 bucks), a 2k Kipor(about 700 bucks) or one of the 250 dollar 2k gennies that are sold thru Sportsmans Guide and many tool and auto parts houses(buy 4 and see if they outlast your buddies Honda)...........

Yeah, I'd like to have bought a Honda but as it is, I hardly use the one I have. It's more of a, I'll have it if I need it kinda situation. I will last just as long as some Hondas, it just sits in the shed. Why have $900 sitting the shed collecting dust when you can have $600 (at the time) in the shed collecting dust.

I think I have decided on the Champion 3500.
A) the price #261.00 at Tractor Supply
B) Big enough to use with the Fifthwheel also
C) It got good reviews
D) can use it here at the house when the wind blows and the power goes out

Don't forget to get a Carbon Monoxide detector, and be carefull of the generator placement around dry leaves and such.

I have the Champion 6800. It is noisy. It is big. But, when I need power, I have enough to do whatever I want. Power outages are common place where we live and it has come in handy. Very reliable. Weighs a ton though!

I'll be getting the ETQ 1200 for the TD. Good reviews. Don't have an AC and where we camp, generally won't need it. Will need something for the heater and the 1200 should do the job.

UC, I would urge you to reconsider...at max, you will have about 10A(or less) of usable power...most electric heaters run around 1500W, which is more than that gennie will handle...even if it will, it will be running at max to cover your needs and NOTHING run at max lasts a long time...I can understand not wanting to put out the bucks for a Honda BUT at the least, you should consider upgrading to one of these(or similar) http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/k ... x?a=537923 ...it should run your "stuff" for a good long while and at a quarter the price of a Honda, you could buy 4 of 'em...I would just hate to see ya buy something that in the end didn't satisfy your needs.......

Wow...did the Kipor come down in price? Or am I just having another one of those moments when I just drift in and out... :? I seem to remember the the Kipor 2400 closer to $450 or so. That seems like a pretty reasonable price for a well regarded genset!!!
