Help me get a job--any HR people here?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby caseydog » Wed Jan 02, 2008 10:12 am

Ira, our ad sales guys sometimes offer MY services to get a potential advertiser to sign on the dotted line. Sure, I have all kinds of time to make ads on top of designing a 128-page magazine.

Anyway, I told the ad sales guys that there would be no more free rides. They need to work with freelancers to get ads made, and advertisers would have to pay for the ads.

Soooooo, PM me with your contact information, if you want, and I will pass it on to our ad sales guys.

Of course, if you get the casino job, you may not need the ad work, but if you are interested, let me know.

Ira,

The Typewriter command should still work, regardless of whether or not they set up the forms. That's the whole point of the tool, to let you fill in a form when the folks creating it didn't bother or know how to create forms.

I"m using v8.1 (from CS3) on a Mac, but I'm sure it was in CS2 as well. You can find it under the "Tools" menu. Of course, your mileage may vary. I learned long ago that there are no absolutes when working with computers.

BTW, you might also want to check out Craigslist for design jobs and creative gigs. Always lots of postings, at least out here on the west coast.

I know it is a pretty basic thing to do, but, have you uploaded a resume to Monster, career builder etc?

I just updated mine with Monster. All of the sudden I had recruiters calling me. I have had 2 phone interviews for jobs that I am interested in.
Yeah i also got a bunch of spam emails asking if I wanted to sell insurance too.

I just got another call this morning that I have yet to return.

Recruiters get paid for placing people. Big companies use recruiters to find them qualified candidates. You need to be in touch with them.

Definitely post on Monster. I did 10 years ago and the response was fantastic. When I got tired of traveling for my last job I posted on monster looking for a change and to stay local.
I got 34 calls the next day. Mostly from corporate head hunters. I had 4 interviews in the next week and 3 offers.
I was working in 2 weeks.

Glenn--I PM'd.

Elmer--I'm Dopey, not Grumpy.

Dean--it ain't there. Nothing like it ANYWHERE. Version 6. When I get a chance, I'll explore the dreaded Help pull-down. (Why do so many Mac guys hate the Help menu?)

Jim and Scott--thanks.

Mark & Steve--finally redid my resume yesterday. (Took me a few days because I'm real anal about it.) So yep--have to upload it to all of the sites, including Monster. Problem with some of those sites is that they'll only take it as a Word file, not PDF. Since mine is laid out in Quark with photos (a graphic design resume has to look graphic-y), it has to be a PDF. So I make a PDF, convert to Tiff, then place the tiffs into Word as a piece of art. The trick is acceptable quality without going over their K limit.

Bill--I'd rather be a shoe salesman than repairman:

A salesman gets to look up the girls' dresses.

Ira, don't use .tif format, if you can help it. You could go with a .jpg format in Photoshop, and select "10" as your quality, and get a great looking file that's smaller. Tiffs are huge files, and can create compatibility issues.

I've done a lot of testing, and as long as you don't over-compress a JPEG image, it will look just as good as other non-lossy formats. Also, only save a JPEG one time -- every time you re-save it, it losses more image data.

A 75 DPI, RGB JPEG will look fine on a recipient's computer screen. Just make sure the type you use looks good in a bitmap format.

I knew that but didn't think of it at all. Unemployment tends to atrophy (sp?) the brain.

A 72dpi jpeg will be a ton smaller than a tiff to place in Word.

I'll start with a 10 quality, see if this brings my 2-page Word resume under the 200k threshold for CareerBuilder, and take it from there.

Just curious, are you talking about pasting your resume in as a graphic? If so, will recruiters be able to do a keyword search on the text?
