The problem with a lot of vintage Airstreams is that even though aluminum shell is OK, the frame rusts out. That is what I found with the 31ft Excella that my dad was going to give me. You have to peel back the "Bananna Skins" and remove the belly pan to get to it. It's a very labor intensive job. It probably wouldn't be too bad for say a 16ft Bambi or even a 19-22ft but when you are talking about doing "The Full Monty" on a 31ft, you need a huge shop and a lot of equipment.
I had the president of one of the Airstream clubs inspect the trailer before I picked it up. They only live a mile from my parents house so it was easy. They said that the top was OK but it showed signs that the frame was not sound enough to tow back to TX.
I'll bet that those trailers suffered the same fate. Especially since it is in FL.
