I think thats what made our trip so wounderful, we didn't worry about time or mileage. 3 weeks of vacation was great. The only thing I had to do was book my first two stops after San Diego and Malibu. From San Diego we drove to Malibu RV park in Malibu, CA then the next stop was Montana De Oro in Los Osos, CA, from there we drove to New Brighton State Beach in Santa Cruz after that we just winged it and ended up camping just off the 101 in Benbow, CA, from there it was quick to Pamplin. We won't do hwy 1 this time. Once every so many years is enough. I've already booked my first stop from Phoenix it will be Emma Wood SB just north of Ventura, CA.

Gee maybe Joanie and I knew each other way back when. Joanie did you square dance in the barn at French's? I did in the 60's.

I would choose Richardsons Grove. It is beautiful. There are hikes up the hill or just wander in the different groves of trees. (across the river is Oak)There are numerous campgrounds but I think that one is the best. Benbow is another nice one just a few miles up the road. (nice showers)

Well, wonder where I came up with a two hour drive time between the Albion River Campground and Pamplin Grove? Like the conversation it sparked. Must be an attack of CRS. Checked Google Maps again and it says the distance is 138 miles and the drive time is about 3 hours. It turns out that's bogus as well and it'd just be a bad idea to travel fast and bypass beautiful spots to stop and /or camp at.

Grant, TDN, and any other knowledgeable locals please tell us more about camping at Leggett, Richardson's Grove, or any other wonderful locals favorite camping places.

I am doing my best to be convinced by Evac A Shack to go on this. Strongly considering this as a 3 generation trip for Evac A Shack, Son of a Shack, and son of a son of a shack. Dad...get to work on our toy and let's make this happen!

Steve,
Richardson's Grove is good.
So are Hidden Springs and Albee Creek... They are listed at http://www.humboldtredwoods.org/
( Might want to click on "Other Nearby State Parks... about 14 others listed, not to mention all the county parks)
Go Here for Humboldt County Parks...16 I think.
You don't have to drive far to find a campground in Humboldt County...
One thing I like about Albee Creek, although the trees right in the campground are kinda dinky, is that it's just past Bull Creek.
Take the road to Honeydew at the Founders Tree and enjoy the Bull Creek area in the Rockerfeller Forest on your way to Albee Creek.
Bull Creek is about my favorite place as far as photographing the trees.

See my kids???

BTW- If you're heading farther North afterwards for a day or two, might wanna try Jed Smith park along the Smith River on 199 just past Crescent City... I think it's the most beautiful river in the world...clad in giant redwoods "a coarse".

Heck... You may as well just move here.

It's one of the better rivers to drive by that I've been near.

Did you go to the botanical wayside with the Darlingtonia, about 10 minutes west of Jed Smith Redwoods?

As for camping, in that area, I like setting up camp at Harris Beach State Park over the border in Oregon, and driving the half hour to hike in Jed Smith redwoods.

You probably already know this, but the Smith River gets it's color from a mineral referred to as Serpentine, if I recall correct. It was on a handout at the Cobra Lily bog.
