Pressure? What pressure? I am continuing my build on the "Guffman" and will be done before the Dam Gathering. The Cub will be a spring or summer project. Maybe you could borrow the '36 woody if you need a teardrop for the Dam event.

47 Cub

Postby mary and bob » Thu Jan 10, 2008 12:28 am

Are you going to tow it home on it's wheels? the 46 Modernistic we bought was only 90 miles from home but the seller had never towed it, it was delivered to him on a landscape trailer. we brought it home in a Ryder truck to avoid any problems trying to tow it. have a safe trip and post some pictures. we recently got a couple of 1947 magazine ads for Cub trailers. I assume this will be a two day trip, are you sleeping in it on the way back. best of luck. Mary and Bob

Teardrop Find

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Mon Jan 14, 2008 6:44 pm

:applause: Jerome, what a great find!

I pulled in to the Kragen Parking lot on Sunday to pick up some belts for my car and I got excited when I saw an older "vintage" teardrop on the back of a U-haul. Going over for closer inspection revealed it was Jerome who'd just picked it up and was stopping in for some tire fill. And I must say, considering its age, the TD looks pretty darn good. I look forward to seeing his restoration. WAY TO GO!

The trailer is home. I think it is a Modernistic. The roof and sides are riveted, not bolted, there are cabinets in the interior and galley, it has a torsion axle, ford wheels and the swoopy aluminum fenders.

I trailered it. The tires are bad (one flat) and the lights are shot. The interior is in pretty good shape with no mold or wood rot. The exterior is pretty rough with dents and some tears in the aluminum. I don't think the streetside door is original. It opens from the inside but has no outside handle. There is also a non original roof vent.

It will need a complete restoration which I will start in a few months. In the meantime I have parked it in my yard.

There are several more pics in my personal gallery. I am trying to document the condition before I start the restoration.

From the interior pic, looks like it could be a Modernistic.

What 'd I say, what'd I say? ;)

Did you toe that tandem axle U-Haul with the Nissan? How did it tow?

I did tow it 1200+ miles with my 4 cylinder, 5 speed Nissan. No problem. I was able to run about 62-64 in 5th on the flat but any hill at all I had to shift to 4th and run about 60 at 3000 rpm. When I wanted to pass a semi I could run it up to 70-75 in 4th with decent acceleration. The uhaul weighed 1740 lbs. empty and about 2300 with the tear in it. I got about 16 mpg overall.

47 modernistic

Postby mary and bob » Tue Jan 15, 2008 12:49 am

looks just about like our 46 Modernistic, same fenders, even has dents in the same places. ours had a later added interior, probably 60's or 70's. restoration is progressing but slowly. have fun with yours. Mary and Bob

Hey, wou're only supposed to go 55mph with a trailer in CA. ;)
U-Hauls are only supposed to go 45mph. ;) ;)

Glad to hear that it worked out for you. You got that Nissan just in time.

I only passed the slow semis going under 65. They too have a 55 mph limit.

I also rented that Uhaul on a local basis, return to the same location as picked up. The guy even said that there was no way to tell how far a trailer had been pulled. 1200 miles for a local 3 day rental may be more than they would expect.
