How to start my own website? UPDATE 1/24

I am thinking about starting up a website for a business I am going to start up. Will be slow at first and go bigger once the kids are both in school full-time. It is going to be for a Mobile Bicycle Repair and here is a example of what I am trying to accomplish.

Just a basic website and general information. Something easy for me to figure out how to do and cheap.

I tried to do a search, but didn't find anything really clear or informative.

Probally use the TD for a mobile repair shop and pull it with the 1970 Blazer...at least to start and if it really kicks off go to something like this in 3-4 years.

I guess up until now I never really thought about how the things got on the screen. The most important part for me is getting it set up and running as easy as possible and user friendly for me and the people going to the site.

I would like to set up myself...because I would like to know how to do all of it without getting help all the time.

Lots of online help for building websites. The Nvu software is really easy to use and to make changes with. Might take a little while to learn, but just set up a test website on your local machine and experiment.

Elmo, if you have high speed broadband service, you can set yourself up as a web server.
I'm running Apache server on this machine, thats what I use to show pics here instead of uploading to a site.

Just a note of caution
You can do that but you'd better read your terms of service with the provider. Most won't allow you to run a web server without paying their server rates. You can find yourself owing them whole bunches of money.
A lot of them don't give you a dedicated IP either so your server address will only work till it changes.
I checked on mine and that's what I found out.
I believe around here they consider it theft of services if you get caught. I could be wrong on that part tho.
Most of them do monitor bandwidth use to an extent.

I have DSL and I run a server (I checked with my provider). You can get around not having a dedicated IP by using a IP service like DNS2Go from http://www.deerfield.com. There are also some free service providers out there too.

Another vote here for GoDaddy. Best place around to register your domain, and their shared hosting is quite reasonable.

Another good bet is using the TypePad blogging service http://www.typepad.com/. Their basic plan is $4.95 a month, and they have a really easy to use front end, so you don't have to know anything about coding HTML. They have also fairly recently added the ability to create standard web pages instead of just blog posts. I send some of my smaller clients that direction if they just need a quick and dirty "brochure" type of site and don't was to mess with hosting or programming. They also have a 14-day trial so you can play around with it for free.

This is a broad topic. You might want to start by finding a domain name via one of the Domain Name Services. If your requested domain name is available you can register it. Next you will need to find a web hosting service. Here is just one link to find the top ten web hosting, or do your own search:

Some providers you can register both domain name, and will provide web hosting. I have always had good service with www.namezero.com. There are many others service providers as well.

Some of the hosting providers will offer a windows based service. Others, may provide a Mysql, or linux, php platforms, or both. Most host providers will have a real simple to use web page generator, point and click to build your first web pages.

Some have mentioned Go Daddy, but looking at the top ten web hosting searches, they are not on the top of the list. I was surprised that the my providers was near the top of the lists.

After looking at everyones ideas and doing a little comparing...I got a couple of PM's and I do have a website and name! I went through Yahoo. They have a pretty easy setup and rate.

Now I just need to build the thing. Luckily there is a member here that took me under his wing and giving me a lot of guidance and help!

Nothing there yet, but hopefully by the time I need it!!

Oh, I know... I've got at least 3 under construction right now and 2 that I am working on total rewrites.
