Inkwell Couch Part Two

Postby Lynn Coleman » Thu Jan 10, 2008 10:56 pm

Hi all,

Today we worked on the couch. I'm sharing this for those of you who might be interested in doing something similar. Simply folding the bed in half wasn't as comfortable as we had hoped. I'm only 5' 2" and Paul is only 5" taller so long legged couches aren't very comfortable for us.

So we decided to make a backboard and upholster it. The backboard is 18" tall and 76" wide (we used 3/4" plywood and 4" foam). The bed is 76.5". We went with .5" shorter for easier removable. It will be put under the bed at night.

The arm rests are made with .25" ply and 4" foam.

We're going to cover the entire mattress with the same material but I had to go to the store and purchase more of it. In the pic you see the white of the mattress behind the back. In the future it will have the same fabric as the backboard.

It's a simple solution and the new back and armrests make it very comfortable. We're also making a center island for the couch that has two cup holders on one side and foam on the other. But I jammed the air gun so we weren't able to finish it today. If anyone knows how to unjam an air gun let me know.

Paul also painted the cabinet doors that will be going under the couch today.

Great idea! Thanks.

What type and manfacturer nail gun do you have? Most guns have a lever or button near the lower front of the nailer (opposite where you load nails/staples.) When you press this, it allows the nail head to "unfold" to let you get to jammed nails.

The couch looks comfy.

I posted to the other thread about your jammed brad nailer.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Here's a pic of the gun.

The brand is Air Ace. We picked it up at Big Lots for only $20. that might be part of the problem. The gun has been great and we've gotten a lot of use from it but I'd like to get even more. :worship:

Can't find a button or lever there, thanks for the input.

Here's a picture of the final couch, note the cabinet doors are also on under the couch. Also the cup holder/armrest in the middle.

We might have to redo the back and put it in two pieces. We'll see after we fasten the desk.

Let me know what you think.

Hi Lynn,

Just curious as to how your upper cabinet door was painted so realistic looking.

HI Gerry,

Actually it is real books that are on the upper cabinet. We used the table saw and cut off the spines of the books. The pictures we mounted on one of those plastic real estate signs that get put up all over the place. We have a problem with tons of signs being put on our church property, so I'm finding uses for them.

If you'll notice some of the spines are taller than the frame work of the cabinet door. So I put a thin piece of wood behind them and glued that to the spines. This way if we choose to change them out sometime in the future I'm not going to mess up the stained trim.

Hope that helps.

Lynn, it is looking great! You should be proud of the results. Not only can you write, you come up with very good ideas on couch's and interiors. I hope some day to meet you and see your Inkwell in person.

I'd love to run into one another sometime Betty. Someday I hope to do some extensive traveling with the Inkwell. Of course, I'm hoping the price of gas will go down too, or the sales of my books would increase to the point that the price of gas isn't a problem. Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting many I've met on this forum.

 very nice interior,

I was wondering about the couch does it fold into a bed and if so how?

I'm working on a futon and need to figure somehing to get it from the sitting to the laying stage smoothly. I was thinking casters on tracks.

Thanks
