So, anyone here a biker or a motorcyclist?

Postby MSG Hall » Sun Jan 27, 2008 9:39 am

I have been riding for about 25 years. I started when I was a kid. My cousin and I would find old street bikes and turn them into dirt bikes. Old street bikes are much cheaper and with a few mods work very well. My favorite at the time was a mid 70s 250 Kaw. When I got it the tires were dry rotted and it wouldn’t start. Well I cleaned the carburetor, put on some knobby tires, took everything off the bike that didn’t make it go or stop and found a smaller rear sprocket for it. I bought a replacement set of plastic dirt bike fenders and I had me a trail bike. I loved it and we built a few of these. I wish I had pictures of it now.

So then as an adult I started rebuilding street bikes to ride. Being in the Army I never could afford much, but I always had something to ride. I have had Harleys, Hondas, Kaws and Suzukis. I build the wrecked or neglected bikes to fit my personality.

I ride in the rain and in the snow. My cut off is around 25 degrees, any colder than that and the wind chill gets to my old bones. I have many biker friends and I am at home in the roughest biker bars you can think of. I have ridden with the Banditos and the Pagans although I belong to no club.

This first picture is the last bike I built, I sold it before I deployed. And the other is the one I am working on now. Can anyone make out what it is?

well... photo bucket isn't working for me. I'll have to bring in the pictures from my personal computer tomorrow... I'll post them then.

I've been riding since I was a kid. Started on dirt bikes when I was about 10 and street bikes at about 15. I've had most of them at one time or another, Harley, Honda, Kaw, Yamaha even had a Husky and a Benelli and a Hodaka for a while.
One of my favorites was my '85 700 Vulcan, one of the most comfortable, dependable bikes I ever had!
Been tearin' them apart and puttin' them back together as long as I've been riding them, in fact I got the Vulcan in a box, albeit a big box. I think that's half the fun of it.
My next one will be a V-8 trike that I am going to build from scratch. Wife won't let me on 2 wheels anymore, my back causes too many problems with my legs and she's afraid I'll fall off.

And yes I have forgot to put my feet down at a stop light once, and only once. That's something you generally don't do a second time. 8)

Got my first motorcycle when I was 4(still have it...1972 Harley X-90...currently my winter rebuild project)and never been without one since. The I rotate the stable every so often, but here is the current herd!!

The one that gets rode the most is the black and orange KTM 950 on the end.

Elmer that is so cool! I could never afford more than one bike at a time. I really would like an enduro... I think the next bike I build will be that. But when I get done with the one I'm working on now, I'm going to be keeping it for a long time. I really like the way it's coming together.

That KTM is 'bitchin', looks like it has touratech bag racks, which means you're familiar with people who ride R1150GS's and their motto if there's a road, it can be netogiated. I bought it new in 02 and it hasn't been in the Pacific--yet, but I rode to Sturgis across South Dakota on unpaved roads (two days--great ride).

I towed my tear to Colorado for last summer with a GS in the back---it was a little slow over McClure with the 6 cyl DAKOTA, but I had a manual transmission and lots of time to go slow.

I did have an FLH, but sold it as it was just sitting there occupying needed space and wasn't being ridden. Still have a XL (project), a Honda 400 thumper, and a 72 Yammer 650 (that I picked up for a fin).

Four wheels good---two wheels better.

Me Too!

Postby HossHoffer » Sun Jan 27, 2008 11:12 am

I currently have nothing working. The KZ750 is in the back 75% together and I just sold the CX500 to a kid at work who needed transportation. I had a Suxuki 850 Marauder but it didn't fit me well. Made my knees hurt. I fix and ride whatever I can get my hands on. I started riding on a cobbled together SuzuKawaYamaHonda. It was a Suzuki 80 with a stamped frame, front forks and tree from a Honda, tank from a Yamaha and seat from a Kawasaki. I used to ride it to jr. High and hide it in the park. The police would try and catch us but we had a trail that ran through the canal and they would have to drive way around to the bridge. The police were cool though. They pooled their money and bought some land near town where we could ride. They also ran timed drag races for us so that we didn't do it in the middle of the night and kill someone. Was a different time I grew up in.

If I don't find a project bike soon I will be without two wheels for the summer. I might just bite the bullet and buy a nice used Honda VTX or a hog. I'm also toying with building a custom around a small v6. And then there is always the trike to pull a teardrop with. So many projects, so little time.

When I was looking to buy a adventure/big dual sport I was considering a GS or a KTM, but the deal on the KTM couldn't be passed on. When I do longer road rides/pavement I think the GS would of been a better choice until I get to the dirt and gravel...it can actually do single track pretty well also.

Picture with the bags on.

Actually that is the boy's soon to be the girls! Eventually it will be made into a pit bike when the kids finally are all upgraded. I already have about 90% of the stuff to make it.

example of a pit bike...
