I think the 292 was a trunk engine in the 1970's based on the Chevy 250 L6 cylinder engine.

Ok now ya got me, A trunk engine? You mean a spare?

I just cant git the gitty up n go with the 216 I have in my truck.. I almost got a ticket with the 216 on the freeway where it says 120 km per hour. And granny grinding on the bottom..ahhh gees.

....the 292 6cyl Chevy engine was the finest/stongest 6cyl Chevy engine ever built...I had two different vehicles with them...granny 4 speed, enough power to climb a utilty pole and 25mi to the gallon...there also used to be a lot of performance parts available for them.............

So Madjack it is also an inline 6 so called? Here I only found a 250 engine ..
this was a year or so ago.

Madjack do you know at all how to go about switching gears in the rear of the old axle so we could cruise a bit better without it making such a terrible noise?

Id like to at least avoid getting tickets for traveling too slow.. ok 80 km/h
is top speed towing a tear anyhow. So at least that.

...yes it is an inline 6...it is based off of the 250 which ironically is a terrible engineIMO(hadda couple of them as well)...I am assuming you have an enclosed drive shaft...to get a higher(faster) gear ratio, you will havvta change out the ring and pinion gears, which is pricey...probably 300 bucks+...if you could find one to fit.......

...count the number of bolts in the cover of the 3rd member and goto a parts house and look it up...you may havvvta goto a "classic" parts pecialty house to find one and even then, it might be tough to find a set for an old, enclosed driveline...I hadda '49 and changed out the engine for a '72 292, a granny4 from a "68 4x4 and swapped out the whole 3rd member gear chunk for one from a '58...also had to fab spring and shock mount on the carrier...clear as mud...right!!!!

The Chev 292 was a truck engine based on the 250. Longer stroke and taller block. Heads and accessories was the same. Was a dandy small truck (real truck not pickup) motor. But was a gas hog. I had a 1972 Chev C70 with a 4 speed and 2 speed single rear axle for a number of years. That truck could pull 32,000 pounds through a soft field and then zip right down a road. Heads on those did like to crack, check that out real good. Wished I had that truck back.

Heikki...just for grins...you could couple that engine to a Hydramatic truck tranny...as long as you are getting parts from over here, I think it'll bolt up to that engine... Doug
