CraigsList Help--Technical Problems

Postby Ira » Tue Feb 05, 2008 8:00 am

Can anyone help me figure out why most of my direct responses to Craigslist's postings are bouncing back as undeliverable? At first I thought it had to with including an attachment, but this is also happening with text only messages.

Here is a link that explains it:

Do I actually have to contact my ISP to fix this? I'm using Entourage on the Mac

If you're not having any other email issues I'll bet it's on the ISP side....contact them first, rule that out.

Do you have another email address you can use? GMail? .Mac? Something like that? If not, get one and try that out using the web-based client (to rule out using the myacc.net mail forwarding services).

I emailed them, and if I don't get a response, I'll make the dreaded call. And yep--I've been using Yahoo mail, with a disclaimer explaining WHY I'm using Yahoo mail:

Looks a little weird applying for a job with the email address "thefloridafunnies." It's also a pain in the neck, because when you click on the Craig listing, it automatially goes to your mail program, so I have to cut and past everything into Yahoo.

Get a GMail account, using a "generic" nomenclature for the username. Sometimes you need to be part of the Republican Party, ya know? At least until you get the job, then anarchy reigns.

your isp won't help you do anything more than change your port settings. Try port 587 and set up SSL and set outgoing to require authentication and see if that works. That is exactly what your ISP is going to tell you. If that doesn't work... and you don't want to use their webmail function, you'll be on your own with higher blood pressure than before ya called. :)

Will I be able to understand this? Let me look--and thanks!

I guess I go to Tools...then Accounts.

Okay--haven't tested yet, but do I check "SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL)?

It's probably a Mac thing.

That should start a 15 page debate.

It is on the ISP side. A SPF statement in the DNS control panel of a website will only let specified servers send an email. This prevents spammers from sending email that appears to be coming from your domain.
I know this because I had a spammer sending emails from what appeared as @sonetpro.com and I noticed alot of bounce backs coming to my catch-all acount.
Once I put a SPF statement in my DNS control panel any mail that does not originate from my hosting servers will get a SPF fail as is seen here and the mail server receiving it will trash it.
Received-SPF: fail (google.com: domain of [email protected] does not designate 84.176.88.217 as permitted sender) client-ip=84.176.88.217;

Your ISP must not allow mail going to or from Yahoo. Yahoo mail is a favorite of spammers.
Send it from a regular email account. I know if [email protected] showed up in my mailbox I would never see it. My spam filter would automatically send it to the trash.

Assuming this is outlook express you are using... go to tools, then accounts, in the new box click on the mail tab.... then highlight your mail account and click properties....

Once in the properties window... click advanced... and click use SSL under outgoing mail server and change port 25 to port 587

Then click on the servers tab... go to the bottom and put a checkmark in the box that says outgoing mail server... Server requires authentication.

Then click ok... close accounts... and all should be well if that fix, corrects your issue.

It ain't working-- it can't even connect to the server:

I'm using Entourage, which is exactly like Outlook:

I'm not touching advanced for Receiving Mail, only sending:

1) I checked "SMTP srrvice requires secure connection (SSL)

2) I checked "Override default SMTP port" ant typed in 587

3) I checked "SMTP server requires authentication.

And this gives you these two options:

a) "Use same settings as receiving mail server"
This greys out options I will mention below, and won't connect to the server.

b) "Log on using"
Which gives you an account ID field, and a password field to fill in.

I have my paper in front of me with all of my user names and passwords, but it won't connect to the server. COuld that 587 thingbe bad?

The only other thing in this window is a field to fill in, "Dpmain for unqualified addresses."

SSL will only work if the server on the other end has it turned on, most don't because it is a mess to implement for the users (i.e. more tech calls). You did everything right, the server on the other end doesn't know what your mail program is talking about. Has nothing to do with your Mac.

Sonetpro is pointing you in the right direction. Port changing won't do you much good I'm afraid. I'm afraid you'll need to talk to someone at your isp.

I've always copy/paste email addys into my yahoo account when composing a message. I'm on Windows XP and go to the internet through my ISP. I don't use an ISP email addy as that comes cumbersome through the many gateways of connections. I never had a problem receiving or sending messages into CL.

Sonet--my Yahoo account is the one that WORKS. It's my regular mail that doesn't.
