Construction Begins!!!

Postby The R/C Man » Sat Apr 23, 2005 3:32 am

Hey Everyone!

Well after browsing the net for hours looking at photos and posting questions to all the helpful people on this board the construction has finally begun. :D Here are a couple photos.

I used the trailer to bring home the supplies.

Limited to the amount of clamps I started gluing up the frame and cutting the rest of the pieces to finish it. After it has set for 4hrs I will do the other side before going to bed. Tomorrow I will glue the rest, cut the foam and drill the holes for mounting.

This Gorilla glue stuff expands pretty good....

I will post more pics as the work progresses......

You don't really need to clamp your frame together, just use 1 1/2" deck screws about 6" or so apart and they will hold it forever. Just remember to sink the heads below the surface.

Hey Kerry!

I didn't want to screw the frame together because I didn't want those screws to be in the way of the wall mounting screws. Plus the frame is going to be bolted to the chassis which should be plenty of added strength.

Once the glue sets up, you can remove the screws.

Ok I have the frame glued up with the insulation installed. I am planning to get the mounting holes measured and drilled before I hit the sack. I better get to it....... Chop Chop!!!

Wow! 2 1/2hrs to remove the wood from the utility trailer and set it up so it doesn't fold. Then I slid the frame onto the chassis and marked the mounting holes from the underside. I was just going to measure them but then...... Somehow it would gotten messed up. Next the pilot holes where drilled followed by the holes for the T-nuts. Here's a pic for you all...

Keep in mind that I am not using any plans. The info was all found here. :D

Greg - looks good... what kind of foam are you using? Is that blue film on one side or both?

Hi Dave!

Thanks! The foam is Ray-tech or something. It is white one side and blue on the other. I wanted to use the harder all blue foam because it has a much better R value but this was all they had in stock and I didn't want to make a second trip to the lumber yard.... It only has an R Value of 4.7. I figure sandwiched in between the floor framing and the floor having a matress over the lenolium it should be ok....

Hey Greg,

It looks like you are off to a great start. Good job with the photos too... Are you putting your photos in an album somewhere? If so, what's the URL?

Here is another update for you all.....
After trial fitting the floor on the trailer to ensure all the bolts would line up I then glued the 1/2" plywood floor onto the floor frame..... Below shows it sitting on the trailer. (Boy did that 1/2" ply add some weight to that sucker) I still have to flush trim any excess material from the top and the bottom sheets of ply were they overlap the frame. This will be accomplished with my router. After that I will paint the bottom to weather proof it and bolt it to the trailer.........

Update...

Postby The R/C Man » Tue May 03, 2005 12:29 am

Hey everyone!

Well the progress slowed on the TD for a week because I needed to buy a sheet of ply, hard board and a router bit. Then I glued up the plywood sheeting to extend it a foot and let it sit for a day. Anyway, I have made the initial cut for the profile. I still need to cut the door and use this wall as a teplate for the other...... Once I get the framing going I will post some more pics....

Greg,

I hate to be a spoilsport, but have you checked that you can bend your hatch skin material round the tight radius at the top of the back end? It looks like maybe 4" or 6" radius, which is going to need at least bendy-ply.

Hey Andrew!

When I smooth it out with the belt sander I'll give it a little more arc.... :D
