Hi,
Air conditioning vents/outlets should always go up high if possible, since cold air falls.
Cold air return should be down low, though in the small space of a tear, you can easily let the return air cycle through the front of the unit as designed, and just duct the cold air.
Here is a shot of my ducted 5000 Btu a/c, the round vent is the cold air, which blows through the adjustable angle vent over the bed.
The return air simply is pulled in through the unit which is near the floor.
