Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I've started to collect materials for the second teardrop. Yes the sickness has smitten me into another clone of the first one with a few changes. I wanted to make the sides Woodie style but to buy Plane Sliced Ash veneer with a 20 mil paper backer in the 5'x10' would be $211 per sheet plus freight. Then there is the expense of using something like System 3 to coat the whole thing. I can get 5052 .050 aluminum with the white vinyl protective sheeting put on for about $121.21 per sheet plus 10 cents per sqft for the vinyl. Alaska Copper & Steel will let me inspect each sheet before the sale and I can reject those that are unacceptable. Sounds like a great deal to me. My Dexter torsion axle was built yesterday and will ship out next Monday. I ordered my chassis steel this morning and can pick it up this afternoon so I'll be welding tomorrow. I found a beautiful 18' board of Canary Wood but I had to have it cut in half for the trip home :cry:

Rob, money is tight so the Ash will have to be another time. I was planning on trimming it in Honduran Mahogany that I have on hand. Maybe the next one. Danny

Have you considered 3/4 Marine Plywood rather than veneer? Or, if you are going with insulated sidewalls 1/8 or thinner marine plywood. Check out Boulter Plywood.

What shade of red is your honduran mahogany? That what I used for mine, but it is awfully light in color, compared to other honduran I have used.

It's not the real dark stuff that I have lots of small scrap of. It's darker than Philippine, I'd say medium in darkness. They are select pieces as is all the lumber I buy. Crosscut Lumber in Seattle is the place around here where you select the lumber & plywood. Yesterday I asked for a new unit of 1/8" Baltic Birch to be brought down and I found about 8 sheets without boats/footballs for ceiling & hatch covering. I ended up buying 13 sheets, never know if I'll make a score like that again.

Danny, if it's wood, it's gotta be good. Am looking forward to seeing pics of your new build. I guess it's true, you can't build just one. Good luck on finding all of the materials you need to make it just like you want it.
