Check out what I built

Postby asianflava » Tue Mar 11, 2008 2:19 am

I was waiting for a clutch to arrive so that I could finish working on my Honda. In the mean time, I built a trebuchet. I've had these plans on my desktop (computer) for years. I printed them out a couple months ago and I finally got around to building it.

It wasn't too hard, I had all the pieces cut and glued together in one evening. I had an oversight in the plans, I had to make the arm out of thicker material but cut too many strips thereby cutting up my arm material.

Built the arm and cut the shafts this evening. I had to relearn the quirks of my horizontal bandsaw. After I got that going, cutting the spacers and shafts were a snap. I still have to make the sling and get a piece of molding for the trough. I'll probably do that tomorrow.

Check it out:

Very neat  I've always wanted to build a large scale catapult.

So what made you decide on a trebuchet over a catapult ?

Also noticed by your map that you've not made it to Indiana, we've got some real good gatherings coming up this year, we're up to 24 at the May one already.

I made a "desktop" trebuchet once upon a time. Flipped marbles across the room.

That one ought to "flip" a nice sized projectile.

Ain't Life just a ton of fun

That is very cool. 8)

But I really stink at aiming those sort of things.

I'll stick to my Red Rider "BB" gun for shooting pigeons.

Golf Balls should be nice to hurl, I have a whole box of range balls. I have always wanted to build one. I had a brief lull so now was as good a time as any.

We've used ping pong ball catapults to teach designed experiments -
you can hit a 6" target across the room.

they're fun.

.Built a few trebs in my time--one traditional (Warlock) design very much like yours. Powered by 40 pounds of weights, it could chunk a golf ball about 120 feet. My favorite though is a modern design from a NASA engineer (good to know the spacr programs dollars are well spent) that is known as a falling block trebuchet. Has a variable length lever arm and with about a 30 inch fall, 15 pounds can chunk a golf ball over 200 feet---very reproducible hurl, once zeroed it can hit a 6 inch target time after time. A third one I made uses bungees instead of weights, but it’s still a treb. Very compact, been thinking of mounting it on the roof of Dogtown Too to make her into a Tax Tear (avast Matey, I'm here to collect Taxes")

Have fun with yours, but be careful, there a lot of energy in that arm waiting to kerchunk any thing that gets in the way of the lever and sling. Oh, don't let anyone stand in the plane of the lever arm while hurling. The sling release is the weakest point on any treb, and an early sling release can hurl the chunk anywhere along the lever arm plane---so be sure to stand off to one side of the lever arm.

Good Hurling,

BTW eggs are nature’s perfect ammunition, but first practice with golf balls

You won't be flinging any cows with it, but it looks like fun.

Now about your horizontal bandsaw . . . is that a homebuilt, too? Details and pics!!
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

I printed out the plans from the site so I have a little project at the shop when i get the time. Might just be what I need to keep the neighbor's cows off my fence. No--not really.

This all looks like too much fun, and a great way to get myself kicked outta my apaprtment complex.

As if the "unauthorized" use of my garage wasn't enough.

My brain is going now...you guys are a bad influence.
