Alaska residents buy cars from Lower 48?

Postby packerz4 » Wed Mar 12, 2008 6:56 pm

Hello,

I heard from a fella yesterday that some Alaskan residents will buy a car from down here, and then have someone drive it to Alaska for them, in return the person driving the car may split the gas with the new car buyer, and the new car buyer pays for an airline ticket for the person to get home from Alaska.

Something about cars in Alaska being expensive because they are shipped there my sea... anyone ever heard of this? Know how to find someone from Alaska wanting a new car?

I'm going to have the next 2 to 3 months off, would love to do something like that.

tk

I don't doubt it...but most in Juneau buy cars locally or if they purchase them outside, have them barged up or drive them up themselves. What I have seen is people drive up with a camper or truck camper, and sell the unit once they are here to recoup the cost. You'll see advertisments in the Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau etc papers that such and such will be in town on such and such day(s) to sell the units. I guess they fly home once the sale is closed.

In the 60's and 70's...ads in the Anchorage paper always mentioned "NO ALCAN" on just about any car used or otherwise, but it was a whole lot of gravel then. It's pretty much paved completely now, so I'd imagine that people are looking for deals like that. Freight costs really add up on just about anything in AK. Doug
