One thing that comes to mind may not be directly on subject. Have you seen that TV commercial where everyone is dancing around using their credit cards to buy stuff, then some twit pulls out cash and the music and the dancing stops, because that's supposed to take more time than a credit card? What alternate reality are these goofball ad people living in? No wonder this country is so screwed up.

When any of my students say this to me, I reply "Yes, you may and you just did." They then give me the "strange look," roll their eyes and then I tell them to think about what they want to say before trying it again. They almost always get it right the second time around and say something like 'May I ask two more questions?" (knowing they have once again, just asked one). Doesn't take long before most are getting it right the first time and just asking the question from the start.
The other question I call them on is when they ask "Can I...(go to my locker, go to the bathroom, etc)? My response: "The question is not whether you are capable, the question is whether or not you have permission." Again, the strange look and then they will ask "May I...?"
It doesn't take too long before other students will correct one another using my same replies. The kids end up with better grammar, thinking before they ask something and most always, there are smiles involved.

I asked my attorney if I could ask him a couple of questions. He said,"sure what's the second one"?

Just thought I'd break up the thread a bit ! Some of you will probably "hate" that!
