Mike, it's mainly about the dogs teaching us what they need/want...and the finer points of that language Pepper's teaching the puppy.
BTW, you will have to see how they get on as the puppy grows, but you may not need to plan for two crates. You might be okay with one crate, size to be determined by how the dogs interact. Depending on the size and manufactuer, you can even get crates which are about twice as long as wide (but still the appropriate height for mini schnauzers, not too tall) which have a divider and two doors.
Casey and M. have separate crates...but at a certain point, Casey (the old man) decided that M. (the new girl) was a very good bed warmer/partner. Casey is in my old setter-sized crate (so he can walk in and out without having to jump/be lifted up), and the two sleeping in it together still only take up half the space of the crate. If your two do end up repeating that pillow picture in the crate, and they're only crated for sleeping, then you may be able to find a crate about half again as long as Pepper's crate that will work for both of them. Give it a bit of time.

two dogs, 17 crates (don't ask...as clamps are to a teardrop builder, so are crates to a dog trainer! 17 is down from a previous high of 49...when I had 5 dogs)
