Computer Geeks. Where do you buy?

My Computers are 6 years old and I need to upgrade.

It's been about 8-9 years since I built a computer or even upgraded except for memory. I've lost contact with suppliers.

I want to build from scratch this time just for kicks and to "relearn" a thing or two. Been looking at NEWEGG but you geeks may ave better suppliers closer to GA.

I may run some configurations past you once I put together a couple systems.

Geron, find some neighborhood geek store and get your stuff there..tiger and newegg and them big STORES sell crap..the local boys get decent stuff because they don't want to do warranty work.

Good advice, I'll look around here in Carrollton/Newnan. Should be big enough to have several Geek joints.

If you've got a reseller license you can order stuff from CDW, Midas Open, and places like that. I used to have accounts with several other places, but since I don't resell anymore I've lost the contacts.

If you decide on using anyone listed on pricewatch be sure to check out their feedback. Some of those guys are a bit shady.

If I buy online, Newegg is a good place. I am lucky (or unlucky) to have a Fry's near my house. It's a West coast store but they have a store in Alpharetta. It is a really big electronics store (with crappy customer service and strange protocols), ours used to be a Builder's Square before it became Fry's. Every one I'be been to are also that big. Each store also has a theme, ours is music. The facade in front looks like a Grand Piano. I went to one in San Jose that looked like a Mayan Temple in front.

Oh and Outpost.com is the online storefront for Fry's.

Newegg and Tiger Direct. I used to build all of my computers. But after my main one crashed I found out I couldn't build one cheaper than I can buy one. I got a HP Media Center and am very happy with it. I even like Vista once I learned it.

In the past I have used http://www.mwave.com On occasion if a part was bad they replaced it no questions asked. I have been happy with their service.

At one time I was at the Fry's in Dallas at least once or twice a week. Some of their deals can't be beat, but a lot of it is junk, refurbs, or returns.

Nowadays you can hardly compete with places like Dell or HP. For the price you generally get a pretty fair machine.

Locally I use Microcenter, the computer candy store of Oakland county... but I don't know if they are anywhere else?

I only build desktops though... for laptops I just buy off the shelf.

I agree with most of the people on here. Newegg is the way to go if you want to "roll your own", but it is getting very hard to beat the prebuilt machines from places like Dell. Dell does give choices for different parts when you are configuring.

Just need to pick the right stuff!! Local geek store is going to cost you and if you don't know, they will sell you the same CRAP!! Newegg has always stood behind what they sell for me!!!
