"Foul" Language

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby PaulC » Sun Nov 19, 2006 5:09 pm

I've been reading this thread with interest and have been paying particular note on how we communicate with each other down here.

If you ever want an education on foul language, just come to Oz for a holiday.

Also, if you are looking to lay blame on the current situation, you have to look no further than the "Baby Boomer" generation.

As for education and use of the language, it has been modified and adapted throughout history. There are several examples of Roman Statesmen complaining of the degradation of their language by the younger generation.

Our parents did it, we did it and now kids are doing it.

Cheers
Paul

Change in language... it's inevitable... The King James version of the bible was written what, just a few hundred years ago? I for one struggle with the language in there... Give me modern day english any time...

1. Don’t use explicit adjectives to speak of (swear words). Never had to or ever needed to even while in the Marine Corp

2. I drive slow at times – even old people give the one finger salute. I take it as the being the number one driver!

3. handicapped permits – my mother was wheelchair bound so it really didn’t matter where we parked according to her – dad had a heart condition and the doctor told him walking was helpful. Both could have had the sticker but choose not to. I don’t get the value of parking up close only to go into a store and walk or wheel around for an hour or more. I’m only speaking from experience with my parents. The distances really didn’t matter. We park way out and walk in nowadays – not much competition for parking out there.

It's funny some of the words that the filters won't let you post. For instance one racing forum wouldn't let you post the promoters last name, "Appleton" instead it put A**leton, never could figure that one out. Another forum would not let me post the name of a local eatery "Dicky G's" instead it put "Thingy G's"
A funny story. In fifth grade, we had a woman come show her vacation slides. The teacher said, "You have so many dam pictures. Uh, I mean so many pictures of dams."
As far as profanity, we had a couple guys at work that would just start cussing up a storm, it would remind me to put in my ear plugs. I find myself getting frustrated and sometimes will start cussing then look around to see if anyone is around, I try to catch myself before I start cussing and just grumble under my breath or talk like Smedley (a dog from some Saturday morning cartoon that I can't remember the name of).
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

At my sister's school, a proper girls' boarding school in the English tradition, the girls responded to a clamp-down on bad language by never referring to the objects with which they played sports as 'balls', but only as 'sphericals'. Drove the teachers wild.

Why do you Navy guys get all the blame in that department? I was in the Army for 8 years and I bet we can cuss as wel as any ____ity-____-______ bell bottom wearing _____-____s.

Really though, in "polite company" my language cleans up alot. But that rule flys out the window in my shop, other wise known as "The House of Sore Fingers 'Cause I Missed the Friggin' Nail"
