primer before interlux brightside

Postby will guthrie » Sat Apr 19, 2008 12:19 pm

I'm back to working on my trailer after about a 9 month hiatus recovering from severe teardrop burnout. I left off needing to make a decision about the epoxy sealer/ primer/ topcoat dillema. I plan to seal the ply with epoxy (east system- like and not opposite to west system), prime with one of the interlux primers and finish with interlux brightside.

My question is this: Do i absolutely need to prime with the 2 part interlux epoxy primekote since i sealed with epoxy, or can i use with the cheaper 1 part interlux pre-kote? And what about pretending the epoxy sealer is your prime coat and rolling brightside, skipping a specialty primer altogether?

I understand the epoxy primekote is very nasty stuff and would want to avoid using it if possible. interlux says it should be used over epoxy to avoid amine blush (whateva that is).
I've followed some great threads on this site which havent conclusively ruled out skipping the 2 part epoxy primekote, including a mention that the rot doctor considers his CPES a suitable primer which can then be topcoated. Sorry if you all think this has been discussed ad nauseum but even after reading a bunch of stuff im still pretty fuzzy on the subject. Thanks everyone

For what it is worth, I've always used a sandable primer like Pre-Kote over epoxy. Surface prep is always the key to a nice finish and that Interlux Brightside will really lay down nicely over it.

The chemical makeup of the various brands of polyurethanes varies

You can read all the horror stories you like from boaters who take shortcuts with the prep and priming work, expecting their final topcoats to cure all their ills . . . . but they never do

If you've spent the extra $$$ to buy the Interlux topcoat, I would definitely use it over whatever they recommend you prime and seal with and not do any 'experimenting' on your own - You likely won't like the final result

I too have rolled and tipped Brightside and used pre-kote under it on epoxy repaired boat hulls. Pre-koat is a highbuild easily sandable primer that can be brushed on in as many coats as it takes to hide imperfections.

thanks for the replies. i did a real quick search to find out about amine blush and came across www.epoxyproducts.com/mepoxies.html and apparently the culprit lies with the hardener and humidity during application( im probably dramatically oversimplfiing). I've been using East System with the slow hardener(834) which the manufacturer assures me is a "no blush" formulation.

I used the Interlux system on my trailer. After reviewing their documentation, I came to the conclusion that their one-part PreKote was appropriate. I scrubbed then sanded all surfaces. Interlux also has a liquid cleaner (I don't remember the specific product number right now) that I used before the PreKote. The final finish came out very good.

You can read my notes about halfway down this page of my build journal:
